I agree with the last post. Two 4 page essays and one 10 page final. I spent all my time on the essays trying to think of what he wanted us to write rather than developing my own ideas. Because that is the only way you'll get over a B. Kids who typically get As and Bs got Cs on his papers. One of the worst classes I have ever taken at UCLA not because of the course or material, but because of the professor. He does not care about student learning, is an impossible grader, and yells at you if you answer his questions in class. Does not listen to you in office hours either. It's unfortunate something as interesting as Philippine History is taught by this guy. If you can, avoid this class or take someone else.

I really enjoyed this course. Prof. Salman really pushed me to think critically. However, I love Philippine history and writing intense papers (very challenging, not as simple as the ones you wrote in lower division history courses!), so if you also like these things, I recommend the course.

Oh, and I always found it amusing of when he would read aloud in character. It woke me up!

Professor Salman is a great lecturer who encourages his students to ask questions during class. The lectures are organized, and there is always an outline on the projector. He is very animated, and he keeps the flow of information at a good pace. He assigns a lot of reading material, but if you don't put too much of it off, it should be quite manageable. Try to write succinct papers on time, and you should be fine. I found this class to be really enjoyable, and despite what some reviewers have posted, Salman seems very approachable and reasonable in his grading.

This guy is the worst teacher at UCLA, not only is he a tough grader but he is so rude if you ask him a question outside of class about the grading. He has terrible communication with his grader, his lectures are okay. He seems cool from his lectures but don't be fooled he is rude and hates life for some reason. I have a great GPA and i am hoping just to pass his class.
