Comm 10 was honestly a great experience. We cover interesting topics and Suman keeps the class engaged even without slides. Be advised to write down everything he says because he will mark down specific words if not used on the test. He says there are no "magic words" but there are! Memorization is key. If you go into office hours or approach him after class he will be a bit awkward at first but as you engage him more he warms up to you and will help you understand the concepts in class.

When giving the presentations he is not clear enough which makes it difficult to write down notes. He talks a lot without being clear and makes the lectures boring to the point you want to fall asleep. He also gives many articles with a lot pages to read so you write notes down which are either on your midterm and final. After writing pages of notes and studying for your midterm/final, you end up either barely passing them or failing them. The midterm/final is all different to material you write on your notes so if you take this class just try your best.
Goddamn this was the hardest fought A- of my life and it's a friggin GE. I'm a math major so writing stuff is not my forte - this class has A LOT of writing, for instance for the final exam I wrote 20 sides of notes with hardly more than a square inch empty on each page. As for the lectures, every one of them involved a lot of writing, say around 5-10 sides of notes. Also, if you miss even a single random line of Suman's in class then you risk dropping major points on exams. In my case, I memorized a list containing six items however it actually had seven, making me lose 3 marks (out of 45) on the midterm.
Fortunately, Suman is organized in the stuff he makes you write as it is usually all lists of stuff which makes them simple to remember and cross check with friends. Also, the content was pretty interesting, especially the first half of the syllabus. I wouldn't say it was worth the time investment and headaches however.
Overall, this class is hard as f*** so if you're looking for an easy GE then look somewhere else and don't make the mistake I did. This class is a weeder class for Comm majors and is not to be taken lightly.
I was unaware going into this class that it is considered a weed-out for the Comm major. The tests are difficult and require a good amount of studying. Since lectures are not accompanied with slides nor recorded, it is essential you write as much down as possible (easier said than done considering it's a 2 hour lecture). Fortunately, most of the material is at least somewhat engaging and nothing is too technical or too in-depth to understand. If you need this class for a GE, look elsewhere. If you need it for the major, it's doable - you just need to put in the time.
Do not take this class if you do not want to be a Comm major. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE A COMM MAJOR. This class took more time and effort out of me than any of my other major classes and I regret taking it so much. Honestly one of the hardest GE classes to take simply due to the workload and unforgiving grading scale. Plus the professor is such an absolute boomer it's obnoxious. Like yeah, instead of posting grades on MyUCLA like a normal person, let's put them on papers outside the lecture hall for ONE DAY. Screw the other people trying to use the same lecture hall for their classes right? Material is pretty interesting, but the TA's are so stringent it's also obnoxious. Especially that essay assignment, which can go off itself into oblivion. Do not take this class for any other reason than being a comm major, you'll thank me later.
Suman is the greatest professor you'll have at UCLA. I usually can't focus for the life of me in most of my classes, but he is the most interesting lecturer you'll ever have. No phones/computers in class makes it such a better learning environment, you have no idea... Comm10 lectures were funny, clear, easy to follow, relevant, important, well-delivered, content packed, and enjoyable. Yes, tests are graded hard but that makes you actually study/do the homework which benefits you not just in school but in life, as communication is something we use everyday, and you can get so much out of this class... It's not hard to get an A if you simply do the work in a timely fashion and take notes in lecture.
Suman is a great professor. He is very engaging and funny and he really knows what he is talking about. This class is considered the Communications weeder and to be honest, it is very hard. There is A LOT of reading and you must attend every single lecture. However if you attend all the lectures, take notes throughout them, and do all the readings you should do relatively well. The one paper that you write in the class makes up a huge portion of your grade and the TAs grade it super harshly. Make sure you start on it early and meet with your TA multiple times to make sure you are on the right track.
Comm 10 is one of the hardest classes offered in the comm department. The lectures are very long, or seem very long because Prof Suman does not use any slides or post any lecture notes so you have to pay attention to everything he says. I recommend literally writing out everything that he teaches in lecture because he tests on a lot of random details that he mentions during class. The first half of the quarter is really fun and interesting (you learn about flirting) and the second half of the quarter is more about communication thru technology. Although it was really hard, I liked this class but would not recommend it to anyone who is not/does not want to be a comm major.
I loved Sumans comm 10 course. He really knows what he is talking about and I found all the material super interesting. Definitely advise taking it over the summer with him because it is a lot of readings and you really need to stay on top of your stuff to do well. Books are mandatory and you have to read them to do well
