DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE A COMMUNICATIONS MAJOR. DO NOT.
This is the ONLY G.E. where participation doesn't help your grade. The exams are EXTREMELY difficult, he says he curves it (making an 80% in an exam an A, but thats because only 4/300 people will get 80% or more in the exams). Each quarter the class has MORE SPACE so that more people will fall into the world of FAILURE and into the hands of SUMAN. The professor makes the class MANDATORY LETTER GRADE because when you see your grade of the midterm you may want to change it to pass/no pass and he WONT let you!!! He makes the TA's give back the midterm on week 7 (which is the week you have to submit a petition to drop a class and pay fees) so that he would make it harder on you to drop the class. He controls the TA's into not helping students and MAKING SURE THAT AN EXCELLENT PAPER DOES NOT RECEIVE AN A or even A-. DONT TAKEIT IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR GPA!!!!
DONT TAKE THIS AS A GE. I took this for communications and it is unnecessarily difficult; should not be counted as a GE. Spending lots of time writing notes for the midterm and final is really important and don't overlook the paper, because that can sometimes make or break your grade. The TAs are very hard graders- you can get the answer right, but if you don't use the right word, they will count it as wrong. Suman isn't a bad person, but he is a very dry lecturer and doesn't use slides. Come to class prepared to take notes for the entire hour and 50 minutes because he will introduce a new topic even if there are three minutes left in class. I would only take this class if you are considering being a comm studies major.
Keep up with the readings, ask questions in discussion and talk to your TA about your essay in office hours (the essay is worth a large part of your grade) and you can do well in the class! It is a lot of work/time but you definitely can get an A if you apply yourself.

Professor Suman has interesting material, but he really isn't concerned about the grades. The exams are not very hard if you master the notes, but he gives so few As. Also, I spent 10 hours writing the 10-page cheating sheet that we are allowed to bring for each exam. If you want to get an A, be VERY prepared or VERY smart.
You can't miss lectures with this class and you really have to do the readings. He doesn't use power points or allow electronics so it's all handwritten notes from lecture. The midterm and final are both short answer and essay questions. The tests are split 50% between lecture questions and readings. Make sure when you take notes to go word for word what he says because if you paraphrase you will get points off. As my T.A. put it, "Your answer and example were right but you didn't use the key word of submissive." Yeah, its annoying. However if you pay attention in lecture and take advantage that he lets your bring notes into the test you can get a B. So I loved this class even though it's definitely a hard GE. His tests are really tough, all short answer and essay questions, and you have to memorize the exact lists and wording he uses. Cannot at all skip class, must write down p much everything he says. If you wanna get an A, you have to do well on the midterm and final because they grade reallllllly harshly on the papers. Subject matter is hella interesting though, if you like social sciences
This isn't an easy A but it's not as difficult as expected. You MUST go to every lecture and write down everything he says, but after that all you have to do is memorize. I have a pretty bad memory, but I put in the time to remember everything he said in lecture and the exam ended up being pretty easy. Flashcards are your best friend. Also, don't half ass the essay the day its due like I did because that is what made me get a B+ when I had A's on the midterm and final.
