This class takes a decent amount of time and energy outside of class as there are multiple articles and books to read. I was a bit frustrated with how Suman instructed the TAs to grade our midterms because he is SUPER picky with answers. Both the final and midterm are short answer and essay questions so if you didn't know the exact phrase/wording that he wanted you did not receive all of the points.

There is a lot of material that is covered in this class and you must attend lecture to get any of it (or use someone's old notes, Suman literally repeats his lectures word by word every year. Suman does not use any kind of technology/powerpoints/podcasts, he literally stands in front of the class, twice a week for 2 hours, and talks. If you do not listen/pay attention/write fast (no laptops or cell phones in lecture so you better write FAST) you will fall behind.

Overall, I thought Professor Suman was a wonderful, highly intelligent person but I wish he had been more fair with grading and had given us more room for minuscule errors.

okay everyone thinks this class is hard, but it's just a lot of material. suman's lectures are boring as fuck and you have to go to every single one if you want to succeed, but as long as you take good notes and study them, you should be fine.

the one thing in this class that tripped me up was the paper, because there's literally no guidelines & my ta graded it super hard. admittedly, i didn't know anything about my topic and i wrote the whole 7-8 pages in like 3 hours the day before it was due. i got like a c on the paper but i still got an a- in the class. the grading scale/curve is super easy and he wants people to succeed. just do your best to stay awake in class and you should be fine!

also, buy & read losing the news and the gender book, but taking sides is like $40 and you don't use it that often, see if you can use someone else's because it's pretty useless to buy (but you still need to do the reading from it).

don't slack off on the online readings and take advantage of the fact that you can bring in notes to the tests!

I enjoy taking classes with Professor Suman! He does a great job with this course. Keep in mind that this is a weeder course for Comm Studies students, so its rough but you have to pull through it! Don't take the class if you're not a comm student (or potential comm student).

The material is interesting enough, if a little basic, but the lectures are all talking. We were in a stuffy classroom with no windows, and it was hard to stay awake. You have to go to class if you don't have the notes already, there are no slides or anything. He gives you what you need to succeed though. If you study, you'll do fine.

This is the only class he does a decent job of teaching. It is a ton of info and the tests will cover all of it. Summer is easier and has less required reading/topics. If you are a transfer student, this class will be a lot of review. If you are Fresh/Soph, this class will be a lot of work but it is required.

I took comm 10 and definitely LOVED this class. In fact, I decided to major in Communication study after this class.

COMM 10 is difficult indeed. But if you really go to lectures and take notes(by taking notes I mean you probably need to keeping writing all the time, and there's no slides you can refer to so make sure you ask Suman everything you are not clear about), and really spend time on readings and take notes when you do the reading, you will be good. The paper was not difficult, I thought I didn't do well on that but it turned that I got an A- for my paper. Overall I got an A.

I absolutely LOVED comm 10 with suman!
It is difficult, but it really helps if you have notes from someone who took the class before, so you can follow along with his lectures without having to divide your time between listening and writing so much. (Email me (*************), I sell my notes for $10)
The concepts are really interesting, and tie in with the rest of the comm major.
Plus, talking about relationships and interpersonal comm? so great!
Just go to lecture, do the readings, and you'll do fine!
(acronyms and other mnemonic devices work really well in remembering the lists of things)
