Suman is an old fashioned professor. He lectures from the front of the classroom with nothing but his notes and the chalkboard. There are no powerpoint slides in this class and lectures are NOT podcasted. He prohibits the use of any technology during class and will not hesitate to stop lecture and call you out if you're on your phone. However, I did come to enjoy having to strictly take notes by hand the old fashioned way. He speaks at a decent pace so that you can get everything he says and will willingly repeat anything if you missed it. He's very kind and the material is really interesting. I am a south campus major and this was my first Comm class and I really enjoyed it! The books he assigns are also fascinating-- I will definitely be keeping them and re-reading in the future! The assignments are really easy and equally weighted. 33% midterm, 33% paper, 34% final. Almost all of the questions are literally given to you before the midterm and final, and they're both open note. If you do the readings and take good notes, this class is a cinch.

Suman's a great instructor overall, however he speaks really freaking fast in comm140. Way faster than comm10 so unless you record the lectures (like I do) it's basically impossible to write down everything you need to know. But nonetheless, I love his comm classes, they are challenging but you feel really accomplished. He actually chooses interesting reading material (in my opinion) but the notes are SO EXTENSIVE, literally so much busy work. However, it is kinda part of the deal considering tests are open note so he has to make sure tons of work time is put in to justify the open note situation (I think). For the final you don't need to study if you're notes are well organized. I didn't study and I got an A, I just made sure I had a good table of contents with page numbers. Also DO NOT wait until the last couple weeks to start influence. It takes five hundred years to complete so start early and life shall be great.
