This is the best class I've taken at UCLA so far and strongly recommend despite the heavy workload, if you're at all interested in sitcoms or TV in general.
The structure of this class is a midterm, paper, and final that are equally weighted. Over the course of the quarter the professor lectured on 11 different sitcoms and themes in the shows that reflected American culture at the time they aired, and we watched the pilot episodes of each of the shows during class. For the midterm we were responsible for watching/finding examples of the themes in the first five shows, and for the final, the last 6. The exams had an essay on one of the shows and short answer questions from the readings. We were allowed to use all of our notes from lecture, the readings, and watching the shows on the exams.
The readings were pretty long but Suman provides a reading guide with questions that you should answer as you read, and the questions on the exams are taken word for word from the reading guides, so you know exactly what you need to take notes on. If you take this class, pace yourself on the readings throughout the quarter because if you put them off you WILL end up unable to finish them.
For the paper we had to write about a theme from a sitcom that is currently putting out episodes, which I found to be a very interesting prompt and not at all difficult to write about. I put time into the paper and received a good grade.
My only complaint about this class is that the essay questions on the shows were very specific, and even though I had a lot of examples from the shows, somehow I found I didn't have enough to answer the questions thoroughly. So my advice would be to find examples for every facet of the themes with all of the characters!
A class that you can watch shows like I Love Lucy and The Simpsons for homework is a win in my book. Suman is a good lecturer, passionate about the class, and approachable in office hours.

This class was interesting and the reading is fun, there is just SO much reading and notetaking it made me question whether it was worth it. Take this class if you are genuinely interested in how classic sitcoms have influenced society, otherwise, you'll get bored and the work will be tedious. If you do take this class, you absolutely have to pace the reading and episode watching because it's impossible to procrastinate and do well on the tests.

The person below me said pretty much exactly how I would put it. DO NOT take this class if you want an easy A. The whole grade is based on three harshly graded assignments (midterm, paper, final). Whoever grades the paper (there is no TA and Suman doesn't grade them so who knows) was so critical and it brought down my grade and all my friends I had in the class. You think the tests on sitcoms would be easy but the sitcom and reader questions are ridiculous and I can't even put into words how horrible it was to spend hours and hours watching sitcoms and answering questions the week before midterm...only for him to cancel the midterm day of and move it to the next week! The final was equally annoying and I believe he didn't do much to help people succeed.
Like the person said below me, he's a nice smart man but he has a very dull personality. I honestly wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.

Best part of the class: One of the producers and writers of Family Guy came and lectured one day and we got to see never before seen clips.

Negative: Was supposed to be an easy "A" class that was fun and informative at the same time. Far from the truth. Midterm and Final are open note, but I warn you they cover tons of questions from the books (Do not procrastinate). The essay was a joke and graded extremely hard. Only 5 pages with very ambiguous requirements and criteria. Got marked down 9 points out of 30 because my thesis was too "vague"!?? (it is a 5 page paper what do you expect??) I am a senior with 3.8 GPA and got a B+. Not happy at all with this class as it hurt my GPA.
Positive: The material was very interesting and Professor Suman is a great teacher. He really knows his stuff and I learned a lot from his lectures. Great guy!
Overall: Only take this class if you absolutely love sitcoms. IT IS NOT A GPA BOOSTER LIKE MOST PEOPLE SAY!

The class seems pretty easy but your grade is hinged on three assignments: the midterm, a paper, and the final. The midterm and final are open note consisting of short answer and essay questions. The tests are easy-ish to pass but the paper is graded extremely hard. I think the class average was 22/30. It has the potential to destroy your grade and the professor isn't helpful at all in offering advice. Might as well take this class with a computer teaching because it couldn't be more boring with Suman at the helm.

I really enjoyed this class, and Suman explained the material well in class. The midterm and final were all open note, so although it took a lot of time to make the study guides, they made the tests quite easy. Basically, the class is analytically watching sitcoms, which is pretty fun compared to other classes.
