Quarter: Spring 2016

The material itself is not super difficult. The hardest part of 33A is adjusting to this new topic of Linear Algebra (especially if you've been taking Calculus for the past few quarters).

With that said, Rombach does make this class harder than it should/can be. The homeworks were rather hard to complete, as they are her own questions rather than the textbook's. It also doesn't help that her lectures weren't very useful. On the bright side, she did post lecture notes. And I found myself learning much more reading the lecture notes and the textbook than I did by attending lecture.

I guess it would help to take her if you're planning on taking upper division math courses later, since she does focus heavily on proofs. (But again, be prepared to spend a lot of time outside of lecture to actually learn how to write those proofs)

Overall, the midterms were rather easy (compared to the homeworks), and the final was more difficult (she does seem to be generous with the curve). I was able to get an A by doing the homeworks and cramming the night before the midterms and final.

Had a piazza, but would respond to your question by asking you a question. Lectures were extremely dry and hard to follow. Only got a decent grade in this class due to the grading scheme and sitting down the last 2 weeks of the quarter to learn all the material. It seems like Rombach likes to give out a higher percentage of grades than most professors, so if you are willing to put in the extra work to self-study you can get a good grade.

Rombach's lectures are very confusing to follow and are prone to going on wild tangents, making them very inefficient. She also doesn't use lecture notes, making lectures even more disorganized. Her TAs explained the concepts far better than she could. On the other hand, she is very helpful and approachable outside of class, providing good help on Piazza and during office hours to those who needed it, which sort of compensates for the bad lectures. The grading scheme and cutoffs are also very fair. Overall, it was an OK class and a good grade is very doable, but was bogged down by the horrible quality of the lectures. If she improved her communication during class time, the class would have been solid.

Dr. Rombach is a very nice and dedicated person who is willing to help students learn. She is very approachable during the office hours, and always answers students' questions on Piazza very quickly (usually within 1 hours).
The lectures are less organized and confusing most of the time, but she posts everything on her website (also same examples). Her teaching style is very conceptual and proof-driven, which makes it hard for people who have no background in linear algebra. (I personally like it because I get to know how mathematics can be useful for other disciplines, instead of being simple boring calculations.) She makes those weird jokes during lectures sometimes and everyone laughs weirdly.
Her exam is very fair. The average is usually 70-80% on the midterms. She also gives a beneficial curve if you do not do well on one of the midterms.
Overall, recommend taking with her.

I'm not sure if this is the right professor, since she goes by Puck Rombach and not Michaela. Anyhow, it is most likely her since she is the only one with that name that teaches Math 33A. I have NEVER had a worse professor/teacher in my life. Rombach is truly the worst professor I have ever had in every aspect. She is unhelpful, unclear, overly-general, and extremely rude. She is completely unapproachable, AND SHE USES PIAZZA. Even over an online discussion board, she manages to make you feel helpless, hopeless, and quite honestly responds to your questions as if you're an idiot for asking them. She is brief and un-detailed in her responses and several of her solutions. She is absolutely of no help to students, in fact she is the exact opposite. I do not recommend taking a course with her. She is well-educated, but cannot teach even if her life depended on it. I managed to pass this class by teaching myself out of the book and finding several online resources. Every lecture I ever attended was mumbling gibberish, so I stopped going altogether, and I noticed many other students did the same. Several of my peers agreed with me about her poor teaching skills. Do not take her class.

Professor Rombach is a dedicated teacher who really cares about her students learning. She gives plenty of practice exams, and her Piazza page is full of homework help. However, her lectures were often confusing (8 am class) and seemed slightly distant from the actual exam material. She oversimplified some topics which made applying them to problems on homework and exams difficult.

Dr. Rombach is a very helpful professor. Sometimes she doesn't explain very well in the lecture, but she is willing to talk to you more in her office hours. Her tests are decent and she gives a beneficial curve, but studying her practice exams is not quite enough. You need to really understand the material as well as know how to elaborate different concept in-depth in order to do well in her exams.
