Highly recommend taking Tingley because he made it really easy to pass the class and give his students a high chance to get an A . He's a really sweet guy and easy to approach if you ever have any questions. (Break down of the grade is at the bottom)

Tingley is an amazing professor and did extremely well transitioning to remote teaching. He cares a lot about his student and makes it his goal to make sure his students are able to succeed. His lectures were clear but pretty boring. I did fine without truly paying attention in lecture, however, I think it's key to understand the homeworks and labs for exams. In section, you'll spend the entire time working on the lab that will help you with the homeworks (not entirely but at least for the basic concepts and some code). Lab attendance is NOT mandatory, but I would suggest going to them because that's where I learned all of the material needed to pass the exams. Most of the time, I relied on office hours and the groupme to figure out the coding portions of the homework. This is the most time consuming part of this class, but they are totally doable. You really don't need to have any background in python or cocalc (although it helps) to finish the coding homeworks. His exams were mostly conceptual where you just need to have a decent understanding of the material rather than coding and you don't need to memorize any formulas.

Break down of the grade:
Prelab Quiz: 9 X 5 = 45 points (graded on completion)
Weekly Homework: 9 X 40 = 360 points (lowest is dropped but still scaled out of 360 points)
Bi-Weekly Knowledge Checks: 5 X 9 = 45 points (graded on completion and encourages you to work with a partner)
Midterm: 1 X 200 = 200 points
Final: 1 X 350 = 350 points

Extra Credit (Up to 30 pts):
Practice Exam Submission: 2 X 10 = 20 points
Course Evaluation (Week 9 – 10): 1 X 10 = 10 points
Total: 1000 points

Dr. Tingley is the best! Spring 2020 was his first time teaching LS40 and you would have thought he has been teaching this course for years. He made the class environment comfortable and enjoyable. I would recommend this course over Stats 13, as we learn skills that are more applicable and valuable for the future. Dr. Tingley did a great job teaching difficult concepts and made doing well in the class highly achievable. There is coding involved, but as long as you took LS30A-B and felt decently comfortable in your coding skills, you will do great.

I would highly recommend taking LS 40 with Prof Tingley!! He is super organized and clear, and always connects class concepts to real world examples. I looked forward to going to class, which is saying something for someone who normally doesn't love Math.

I was first doubtful of taking this course because of what I heard from friends who previously took this course. Maybe they had a different professor, because I LOVED Dr. Tingley as my professor. The workload of LS40 is very manageable--one homework per week, one coding lab per week, and one online "quiz" per week that you have multiple attempts for. Dr. Tingley as a lecturer is very entertaining, funny, and he connects concepts to real-world issues and things that he knows his students can relate to. He presents ideas and core concepts very clearly, providing practice finals and a lot of other support to do well in the class. This is coming from someone who never participated during lecture. Moreover, he is very responsive and open-minded--if there is an issue or if a lot of people complain about something, he will listen and compromise. I totally recommend Dr. Tingley!

Professor Tingley has been one of my favorite professors at UCLA and he has truly made me change my whole perspective on statistics. This is one of the few life science classes where you can actually see the application of what you are learning to the scientific field, and more specifically the medical field. The professor was very engaging, very clear, and straightforward. For anyone who has struggled with statistics and mathematical concepts, this class is perfect with Professor Tingley. I took it along with LS30B and I felt very supported without any stress. Also, the coding is a huge aspect but you are told what you are required of and there is a lot of guidance along the way!! Midterm and Final were very fair and straightforward. Highly recommend this class and specifically this professor!!

His question answering skills were lacking, and he straight up gave false information about the tests. Not a huge fan cuz the class seemed easy but then the tests were not what he told us.

There are some fundamental concepts that are difficult to grasp which (in my opinion) is what makes this class hard. Prof Tingley is very patient when it comes to making sure this is clear. I wasn't doing well in the class because of this as well as the change to online formatting as well as the social climate in our nation during this time. Prof. Tingley was very understanding and was making accommodations even before the LS Core came out with guidelines for how to handle finals during this time. I think that was an important show of character and something huge to take into consideration when choosing a professor, and Tingley passes the test with flying colors.

Dr. Tingley is a great professor. He dealt well with the transition to online learning and regularly expressed his concern for the wellbeing and learning of the students throughout the quarter. He showed us specific ways the thinking and skills we learn in the course can be applied to real issues we are currently experiencing in the world. He is funny, engaging, and loves to talk about birds.

This course is much more useful than anything you would learn in a classic statistics course (i.e. Stats 13 or 10) and I have already been applying the skills I have learned in the course to my research. The homework can be difficult, but it is graded fairly and is reasonable to do if you complete the associated lab and check out the lab solutions.

All in all, I highly recommend LS 40, especially if you can take it with Tingley.

Dr. Tingley is a great professor. This was his first quarter teaching at UCLA, and he approached the transition to online learning with ease. He cares about his students and will do the most to make sure that his students are able to succeed. His lectures can be repetitive, but he includes great examples that really help to understand the concepts he teaches. The homework can be lengthy, but it covers all of the concepts taught in lecture and prepares you well for the tests. If you go to labs and use the TA's as a resource in lab, then the coding will be no problem on the homework or exams. You do not need to have taken the LS 30 series to do well in this class as long as you go to lab and learn how to do the coding . His exams are a little difficult because he asks you to explain concepts and show an understanding of statistics as opposed to memorizing and applying formulas. But, if you pay attention in lecture he will explain everything you need to know. He also offers plenty of extra credit (up to 3%) because he wants you to do well in this class. Dr. Tingley is a great professor, and I would recommend this class to anyone who needs to take statistics.

Prof Tingley was an awesome professor; super great lecturer and teacher in general. He’s very kind and concerned with student learning. He offers extra credit and allows homework and other classwork to be fairly weighted so that grades are not just based on tests. The tests were challenging but also engaging. I really enjoyed the coding component of the class because after taking LS30A & B it was not too hard and very helpful for learning concepts. Definitely recommend.
