I would definitely recommend Hempel for this class. She has obviously taught this class many times and she explains concepts and proofs really clearly, and this is coming from someone who usually can’t follow along in class. The tests were fair and the curve was generous and she obviously cares about her students.
Professor Hempel is really nice as she truly cares about her students' well being. The quizzes and midterms are pretty easy, and even so, she still grades leniently. There are totally six quizzes that constitute 50% of the grade and she lets us drop two of the lowest scores. The midterms are 10% each, which actually makes each quiz (12.5%) more important than each of the midterms. The only shortcoming of this class is the extremely lengthy final exam which took forever to finish. Overall, she's a great professor who knows the materials well and I would definitely recommend taking 115A with her.
Honestly, I think Hempel gets a bad rap. Going in, was pretty concerned about her poor reviews, but she's honestly very invested in making sure that everybody in the class understands the material. Compared to my other math profs (lower div & upper div), I think she's on the clearer side of things, and is more than willing to take time out of class to answer questions/make sure that you fully understand everything in the class. She's also super helpful in office hours! She also has a set of really helpful typed-up notes that match exactly what she talks about in class, plus some extra comments - super helpful stuff!
There's weekly homework + midterms and a final, but I didn't think that they're especially bad for an upper div math class; certainly better than all the other one's I've taken since this one. It's a jump up from lower-div math classes in general, so you'll definitely want to watch out for that.
Overall, pretty solid class that gave me a good understanding of linear algebra. Hempel is a super nice prof and a solid lecturer. Would definitely recommend!
I took Hempel for Math 33B. She is the worst math professor I have had by far. She is rude, unorganized, and frankly I don't think she even knows the material. Don't take her. Just don't. Math 33B itself is not that hard, but Hempel failed as a professor. Here are some examples from our last class: She wouldn't work out the solution to a practice final problem because she was afraid she would mess it up. Or when we didn't finish going over the practice final because she wasted so much time being confused and flustered when ever we asked her questions. Someone asked if she could post the rest of the problems online or email them to us because we ran out of time to go over them. She said no, that we should know how to do this. Well I didn't. That sucked.
This is actually a review for Math 180... I totally agree with other reviews. Her lectures suck as the professor herself was not familiar with the material and made mistakes(sometimes even very stupid and trivial ones) all the time. At the end it seems like she was just explaining to herself, rather than to her students:)
But luckily the textbook is quite clear so if you are willing to read the book carefully, you shouldn't have any problem with understanding the class material.
As for her exams, I would say they were pretty fair. Around 60% of the problems were like basic application of concepts we learned in classes. The rest were proof problems which were not that impossible to do either.
Overall as long as you really studied the textbook and homework the class should be doable.
I had an AWFUL experience in this class, and that says a lot considering I'm a math person. 33B doesn't have very hard material, but this professor was so inadequate it ruined the entire course. She came to lectures unorganized and unprepared. The lectures were so confusing, it sounded like she did not even understand what she was teaching. She would constantly make mistakes in the lectures and say "Uh, sorry" over and over again. The concepts were not clearly split up, so at any point in time the class was not *exactly* sure what they were even *trying* to learn.
Don't get me started about the tests.. first of all, this professor REFUSED to upload the practice test solutions online. Instead, she would do them in the last 10 minutes of class, but this was NEVER enough time for her to finish or give reasonable explanations for the answers. In the case of the final, she gave us a set of practice problems and did not even finish giving us the answers to half before the final. When asked if she would put them online (considering it was our last day of class and our final was a few days away) she simply shrugged and said "Well if you don't know this by now its your fault". Not to mention, our midterms were trivially easy but the final was RIDICULOUSLY hard in comparison and seemed to touch of concepts outside the scope of the class. A lot of students got screwed over because of that.
Last things: she doesn't collect homeworks. Instead she gives weekly quizzes, so discussion is mandatory. The TA I had was almost as bad as the professor...
Also, she wasted about 10-15 minutes of each midterm passing out tests because she seems to be the only professor who can't figure out how to do it...
