NICKOLAS ANDERSON IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN thus far in my college career. He is extremely clear and if he isn't, he will literally take every single questions students have and sometimes dedicate an entire lecture to explaining a confusing topic. Series can be pretty tough, though; I got an 86 on the first midterm (only integration) and a 68 on the second midterm (beginning series/sequences) and pulled a 199/200 on the final to get an A in the class. He does the normal drop-your-lowest-midterm thing so you're allowed to mess up once. You can also drop the two lowest homeworks. Homeworks are graded pretty fairly.
He's just the greatest, man. You will just love everything about him. He's not at all like any other math professor I've taken; he's really understanding, has adorable nerdy humor, cracks lame jokes, etc. aka he's actually a normal human being, just with a math PhD and an amazing brain. Legit I'd get excited to go to lecture (I'm a nerd too though). His office hours are also super helpful.
I'm also taking him for differential equations (33B) and he's just as great. He knows what trips students up and how to address those issues. Please please please please please please take him you will love him prepare to work but enjoy it!!!!

Lectures were super clear and engaging. Took the class at 8am but was for sure worth it! Nick gave his students all the materials needed (practice exams, extra hw problems) to succeed and was very helpful.

Andersen is a god. Clear lecturer, gives enough time for people to ask questions in class, gives very reasonable hw assignments + exams. Super sad he's leaving UCLA soon.

Nick is a great professor. His lectures are clear and he often cracks a couple jokes. I would definitely say his tests are fair, but that does not mean they are easy. Each week in discussion you are given a worksheet with tough problems that are seriously hard. I went to my TA's office hours every single week because he would go over them there (thanks Talon!). The discussion worksheets are important because at least one problem from one of the worksheets WILL show up on the exam almost verbatim. So if you go to office hours and figure out how to solve it, you should be good. After taking other math professors throughout the year, I would definitely say that Nick really does give fair tests. He will only throw things on there that you have seen before, and as long as you get the gist of it, you should be good. There are, however, no cheat sheets and 31B isn't exactly a walk in the park. The average for both midterms was around 70%. It covers some pretty complicated concepts. Homework is due every Friday and the lowest two are dropped, but the homework is of a doable load. Nick as a person, however, is very funny, which was good because I took this class at 8 am and he tried his best to wake us up.

Linear Algebra is not an easy subject but Professor Andersen certainly helped a lot. He starts every lecture answering conceptual questions that the students may have before he teaches new material. Nice handwriting; clear lecture; solid enunciation and voice. Prof. Andersen is clearly very passionate about math and tries to show how the math is applied in certain fields. He is pretty funny too: witty comments about his weekends, dad jokes and selfie with students before midterms :P Every once in a while he will comment on how he screws up computations (let's face it, everyone makes mistakes when dealing with matrices, you're totally fine Nick). Overall, one of the best professors that I've ever had and I am confident he will be a great educator wherever he goes.

Although he is leaving soon, I just want to thank Andersen for a really great 33A class. This is literally the best professor you can possibly have -- uses gradescope, really, really good lecturer, super clear, very knowledgeable, crazy fast at grading + answering questions @ piazza, gives very reasonable hw, but has additional practice, posts detailed study guides + discussion worksheets, etc. Only think I wish he did was post a practice final / midterm, but honestly this is nitpicking. Andersen made me excited to go to class everyday, and I think the whole class did too -- the classroom was literally always full the entire quarter.

The midterms and final were pretty easy, I think a lot of people got an A. But we learned a lot, especially compared to other 33A classes like Das / Hlusckanka (however u spell it). We started eigenstuff week 6 vs week 9 for the other classes, which really allowed us to learn them thoroughly. Overall, if you ever get Andersen (although this will probably only happen @ another university), consider yourself lucky. He is the best professor I have had yet at UCLA and probably will be for a while.

Nick is a really great professor. That being said I thought the class was fairly difficult as we cover a lot of material in a short period of time. Nick's lectures are very engaging and helpful to students who don't have prior experience with this class (I didn't take AP Calc BC and felt like I could mostly follow along). The exams were fairly difficult but I probably could've done better if I focused more on the worksheets we do from discussion section, as he takes a random question and puts it verbatim on the midterms (he will go over this in lecture). If you have to take this class, Andersen is a great person to do it with.

Professor Andersen is a stand-up guy with a good personality. He's very knowledgeable on the subject and takes as many questions as you may have. His lectures are engaging (although, he does do a lot of proofs) and are quite worth it (so don't miss lectures). His homework questions are a bit challenging but definitely not as much as his discussion questions. The discussion worksheets are ALMOST impossible to do and since one of of the questions shows up on the exam, students often memorize the answer for "free" points. I don't personally think the discussion questions actually teach anything, but others find it "intuitive." His exams...oh man..those are tough. The first midterm hit me like a wrecking ball and it caused me a good amount of pain to recover. In a nutshell, Andersen is approachable and a good teacher, but man does he make you work for your grade. Good luck, bruins.
