Winter 2026 - MY FAV INSTRUCTOR EVERRRR! I cannot stress this enough: take this class with Nicole! She is a young, fun, and engaging instructor who makes you not want to miss a class. The class is fairly small (around 25 students), so she makes it very discussion-based, especially since the course is about minor feelings. You get to know your classmates and Nicole, whom we all really loved, and we became like a little family. She is also very flexible; if she sees we are stressed, she would ask us if we wanted her to push back a due date, or she would allow us to resubmit an assignment if we missed something to receive full credit. The class assignments consisted of a creative non-fiction piece (1-2 pages), a poem + reflection (2-3 pages), a fun website project (sort of like creating a Pinterest board), a paper (5-6 pages), and then a final second paper of 5+ pages OR a creative project + reflection (2-3 pages). Everything was graded on completion, except the bigger papers (the 5+ ones). She does have assigned readings, poems, or media that you need to watch or read before class, but it was never overbearing like some professors who assign sooo many pages before lecture. It was always short and manageable. Participation does matter, but even for people who mentioned they were nervous to talk during the first weeks, now speak so much just because of the great environment. Even if you don't participate that much in class discussion, you can still do well because she does have you do a short presentation on one of the assigned poems/media/or articles that we are required to read before class. Very low states you just talk about the author, what the assigned medium was about, and then ask 2 discussion questions for the class to engage in. There is also a chosen media assignment which lets you pick any song, poem, artwork, etc to show to the class and how it relates to the topics we have been talking about. You are allowed 2 excused absences. Overall, if I could take this class again, I would! I feel like half of the class is us yapping about whatever (she does ice breakers at the beginning of class that lead to random conversations), and the other is discussing the pieces, and she leads mainly everything and guides us. It's all what you make of it; if you participate and have good/engaging peers in your class, you will enjoy your time. Love her and the people I have met in the class!
