1 midterm, 1 final, and a group project that was split into 3 different parts.
Lectures are not recorded.
No practice exams.
Class is not curved.
While the exams were not super difficult themselves, this class absolutely cooks you with anything that is written. The group project was all written and was graded extremely arbitrarily. It is 20% of your grade, and when grades came out for it she gave one sentence in class saying why they were scored the way they were. It was quite a poor and incomplete explanation for something that ends up being critical to your grade. The prompts for the various parts of the group project were quite simple, but what she ended up looking for was super poorly explained in the directions, which reflects in a lower-than-expected grade. Additionally, the final exam was 55% of your grade and split into two parts (40% & 15%). The written 15% portion was again super arbitrarily graded. The prompt was quite simple, and for some reason, it was graded super harshly. I believe this is a general trend for Osei classes. Exams are fine, but the written stuff is super harshly graded. Overall, Osei classes and especially 137 suck pretty badly. Try your best to find a class that doesn't grade your work super unfairly and provides zero feedback for said scoring. Trash class.
this was one of my least favorite econ electives, pretty boring and unclear at times. despite allowing more than enough cheat sheets on both the midterm and final i felt lost while trying to prepare since there were no practice exams. the practice questions helped a little but it was a drop in the ocean compared to the content on exams. it was also frustrating how she shaved off points on the group assignment while being super vague on the criteria for what warranted full scores. overall i don't recommend this class it was a snoozefest
This was by far one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Lectures were not engaging at all and the slides were just copy and paste from the textbook. The professor was really bad at explaining concepts, so I taught myself everything from the textbook and google. The professor barely explains anything and always repeats the phrase "just read the textbook and you'll be fine", why am I paying tuition for this? Despite the fact that the professor merely skims over the econ material, the tests go way more in depth and I was caught off guard during the mid term because I did not expect that difficulty. I also felt like the tests were testing my math and english more than my econ concepts. Overall this class was super frustrating because the content is easy but the lack of teaching just makes it a hard class to ace. It was pretty frustrating when the professor barely went through the tougher mid term questions that most people did not get, not to mention there are ZERO practice tests and she just says "you either know it or not" I'm truly not sure how to feel about that explanation of not providing even one practice test. It bewildered me to see her use class time instead to play "games" and discuss material that wasn't that important to the class, for example spending 30 minutes asking people what their minimum wage experience is like instead of spending more time on the PS/WS curves. I'm all for a good discussion but considering how little teaching there was it wasn't great to sit through a lecture just listening to random stories when I'm stressing over the final. If you are great at self teaching then don't bother going to lectures and just read the textbook- it explains everything much better. In general, stay away from this class.
One of the worst econ professors and that’s saying something. Half-assed lectures, unclear assignments and messy tests. Professor was poor at explaining things, made MANY mistakes on exams and cancelled class multiple times. Would only recommend this class if it was your last resort. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR
I switched out of Econ, so maybe its a skill issue, but this material is so boring. The professor made it as interesting as possible and I honestly love her. Didn't go to office hours, but the class was easy enough that I don't think it was necessary. Don't read the textbook, don't waste your time.
Overall pretty good professor. She is really engaging and gives great presentations which is good because the homework for this class is an excel spreadsheet thing that has very little to do with overall class material. The assignment is not very useful in studying for the final. I only did better than the class average thanks to me saving my AP Micro/Macro Barron Exam Prep book otherwise I would have legit gotten a C, because the final was hard with lots of twists and turns. She did let you bring in 5 cheat sheets which was extremely helpful on exam day. She is nice and very approachable during office hours tho, highly recommend this goat.
Professor Olivia is very kind but is not clear. She is the professor who does not like practice problems or tests, and says "you either know or it don't" Which comes to be true but can be intimidating if you are nervous or just want to test how much you actually know. She will not curve or round grades, so the avg of her courses tends to be a B. Exams do not have many questions so beware bc you will miss 3 and be at a C. (lot of check all that apply making it difficult). Got screwed out of an A- bc she didn't round an 89.6 after acing the final as well. She is fun to speak with but once again, grading of projects is graded by TAs, so do not believe her if she says you did well. Also grading is based on the class, so if there is 1 group who writes 20+ pages, when the limit is 8, they will get A+ and everyone else will be held to that standard and end up with Bs on projects that are meant to boost ur grade.
This class was super full and just getting a seat was often an issue. People from all grades and no group projects also made it really hard to try and find study groups of any kind. Overall slides were pretty clear and were posted, so easy to go over. Wish I went to more student hours—I went before the final and they were super helpful so definitely recommend. Rough grading only because there are like literally 4 things in the gradebook so if you don't do well on the midterm and final you are screwed. Got an 80 on the midterm which made me have to get a super high final score to get an A so just keep that in mind.
Prof Twumasi was all over the place with the lectures. Often sped through the slides and would end class 30 minutes early without explaining much of the content on the slides. That being said, content and tests were very straightforward, just not a lot of good instruction in the lectures. Overall easy class.
I was a little nervous about this class since I’d never taken an economics course before, but Professor Osei made everything so clear and easy to understand. Some topics are more complex than others, so I definitely recommend staying on top of the readings and lecture notes. After midterms, the class picked up when we started learning about the graphs and how everything works together. That part was a little tricky for me since I’ve never been great with graphs, but it’s manageable with some extra practice.
The final was worth 50% of our grade, which really scared me, but it ended up being fine—though some of the questions were worded a bit poorly. There’s also an Excel project worth 20%, which takes some time, especially if you’ve never used Excel before. I hadn’t, but a few YouTube tutorials got me through it! The online midterm and discussion are worth 15% of your grade.
One great thing is she offered 1% extra credit, which bumped me from an A- to an A. I didn’t do my best on the final (88%), so it brought my grade down from a 98 to a 93, but an A is totally achievable. I highly recommend this class, especially if you can take it with Professor Osei.
