*** COVID-19 Review ***
Greene is really good at actually explaining the math we're working on and goes over a lot of examples. I found it very easy to follow her lectures. She does give homework through Sapling, but you can easily get the answers for it and it's hard for that to knock your grade down.
Apart from that, she was a bit of a hot mess which is why I knocked down her ratings. She originally said no exams and then added them, and there were multiple moments where she changed the exam as students were taking them (however she gave me a 100% because of all the issues). She is a very sweet lady, and I know that the transition was especially rough for her and she had a lot on her plate, but beware.
You will be able to get an easy A in this class, but do not let it trick you. Be attentive if you need to continue to Math 32A, because it is easy to just stop paying attention and still score well.
I took this class as Math31A in Summer 2020. The professor is really generous with grades and does not give impossible tests (mostly they’re easy but certain questions are hard but since we are in quarantine we used the app sapling to do tests and it was pretty easy as it gave us more trials). She is also really understanding (I misunderstood something and forgot to submit my work but she let me resubmit it).
Coming to the cons, her explanation was not really understandable at some points (Hard concepts) and was kinda messy. Sometimes, she would explain really briefly in class but the hw would be harder, things she didn’t discuss in class. The TA’s (Harris) was amazing and was really helpful in office hours(legend). He gave so many office hours and gave review questions which were kinda harder than the test but were helpful to get a strong understanding. Overall, most of us got As (the average was 94) but at some point I had to work hard to understand and the workload was kinda tough. If you would like to guarantee a good grade and are welling to work hard, take it.
Let me tell y'all. I would NEVER recommend her for anyone who hasn't already taken AP Calculus AB and understood the concepts. I went in knowing little-to-nothing, with only a background in pre calculus, and went out of the class knowing little to nothing. Do NOT take this class unless you already know calculus.
Amazing professor. Doesn't make calculus incomprehensible with random proofs or endless babbling, but rather makes every concept crystal clear. Office hours are always filled with students as she is very approachable and helpful (and does not make you feel dumb for asking "dumb" questions"). Tests and homework are VERY fair, and you will learn. Highly recommend!
Professor Greene is an absolute gem! Her lectures can be a little dry sometimes, but they are really helpful for the homework and exams. She even gave us a lot of time for our midterms and finals due to COVID-19. There is a decent amount of work for this class. We had a written assignment and an online assignment every week. However, she puts homework problems on the test so if you understand the homework, the exams will be super easy! I only took up to honors pre-calculus in high school because that was all that was offered, but I still found Math 3A to be very doable!
*TAKEN WHILE WE WERE IN A PANDEMIC*
I took Math 1 with Professor Greene about 2 years ago and she as an amazing professor then so I decided to take her this quarter for Math 3A and she was a great professor overall as well. I am not very strong at math but the TA that I had which was Joel broke everything up step by step which made it easier to understand since her notes are kind of messy. The class consists of weekly hw, mylabs which is another math assignment you have to complete on top homework but it's pretty easy if you do it with your friends, two midterms, and one final. It was pretty straight forward. She gave us sufficient time to finish all the exams and to finish the hws! If you are looking for a great precalculus professor and calculus professor, professor Greene is the way to go. GOOD LUCK!!
Honestly, this class was pretty easy, Professor Greene is really nice, and most people do well. This class was honestly wayyyyy easier than AP calc in high school, but I would imagine that if you've never taken calc before it might be a little confusing. Professor Greene can be a little disorganized and unclear sometimes, but she is incredibly helpful so if you ever feel confused you can definitely talk to her.
Professor Greene is probably the best professor for the entire Math 3 series. She is very engaging and clear and her exams are very doable. If you do all of your work and attend the lectures, you will probably do very well in this class.
As for the class, there are usually two assignments due every week: 1 written assignment turned into Gradescope and one MyLab assignment. The MyLab assignment takes an hour max, but the written assignments can be quite challenging sometimes. I would recommend starting on the written assignment earlier in the week so you can get help during office hours if needed.
Professor Greene always has her students' best interests at heart. I would 100% recommend taking the Math 3 series with her!
Grading Distribution: 20% weekly written homework, 20% online MyLab Pearson homework, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2, 20% final (second grading scheme: lowest midterm grade gets dropped and the final is 40% instead)
What I liked: The class is not extremely difficult, and if you’ve taken AP Calc in high school, a lot of the concepts are review. Having some background also helped with the pace of the class since we could spend anywhere from one to three lectures learning a concept. Lectures are not that engaging, but copying down the notes will help you with the homework. The problems on the midterms and final are extremely similar to assigned problems from the written homework so make sure you do the written homework and understand how to solve the problems (MyLab Pearson does not help at all with studying so don’t waste more time than it takes to complete all the problems). The midterms and final were open notes/open book and 48 hours long, but no more than a few hours total are needed to finish the tests. Attending discussion is optional, but Jerry would sometimes use homework problems as examples so it was a good way to make sure you understood the steps needed to complete a problem.
What I disliked: Based on the other reviews, this is an unpopular opinion but Professor Greene was not that helpful. She has office hours after each lecture, but if people do not stay, she’ll leave the zoom call instead of allowing us to just work on problems and unmute whenever we need help. Also, if your wifi cuts out after the lecture, you can’t re-enter the zoom and attend office hours. Sometimes, when asking about a concept, she’d respond with something along the lines of “we learned this in math 3A” even though there are a few people who skipped out of or didn’t take 3A. While she’ll still answer the question if you ask her to, I’d end up just searching the concept up online or asking the TA. Professor Greene also scheduled lectures during the two holidays, saying that since we’re all at home, we don’t have anything else to do, and if we were in person, she wouldn’t “dream of stealing our holiday.” While attending these lectures (and all) was optional, she often left problems half-solved at the end of one lecture and said she’d finish it in the next lecture, making watching the previous lecture before attending the next one necessary. Near the end of the quarter, she also started putting the Gradescope assignment up a day or two before it was due rather than how she used to put it up almost a week before the due date.
(For some context: I never took calculus in high school) Professor Greene is extremely accommodating and kind. She provides plenty of opportunities for students to receive help and always notifies her students beforehand of any updates or changes she makes to assignments. She is also very understanding and really tries to connect with her students. With that being said, this is definitely a class you need to study for daily. The course moves quickly and you cover a lot of content in 10 weeks, but she provides ample amount of resources for you to learn. There are a few long assignments due weekly, but they really help solidify the content you learn that week. Overall, Professor Greene is amazing and I am so happy I took her for my first math class at UCLA.
