Professor Keating is great! Going to lecture and discussion really helps you master the material.

I loved this class. I went into in thinking it was going to be super hard just because everyone told me that it was going to be the worst Ling class, but I genuinely really enjoyed it. I highly recommend going to lecture and discussion, because if you don't, you probably will fall behind. In lecture, Professor Keating goes over how to produce the sounds, and in discussion, you get feedback on your sound production which is good practice for the final. The big project for this class is an essay on the phonemes of a language of your choice. Just make sure you do the research and do the preliminary reports and you should be okay. Overall, I loved this class, but you do have to put in the work for it.

Textbook technically required, but you can get by without it. Just write a good paper and pay attention in class. Lectures often have ungraded quizzes that help for the final.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to take this class with Professor Keating! She's a big name in phonetics so you know you're getting the best. She is also just the sweetest person and you can tell she likes what she does. The class was not too hard - you just needed to put in the effort. I'd recommend going to discussion because you have to be able to produce the IPA sounds and you practice those and get feedback on your production in section. It might feel weird to make strange sounds in front of classmates at first, but it's helpful and you'll get used to it. Professor Keating made this class a lot of fun and I feel like what I learned was extremely valuable.

Professor Keating is really funny at times, and I'm sure she doesn't mean to be. The material was good, and it was pleasant to have her instruct. You may want to sit in the front though. During section you need to have confidence in yourself cause everyone must articulate the sounds for that week.
The final paper wasn't too bad, you choose the language you want to do it on. There were weekly mini-quizzes that were posted online, they weren't hard at all, the only issue it to remember you need to take them.
