Took ECON 106F with Professor Convery last quarter. He is a really nice guys, always willing to help you during OH and really makes an effort to help you learn the material. The class lecture were pretty well organized, most of the material mirrored the textbook, so much so that the pp were actually from the book's publisher with some alterations made by the professor.
Overall the grades material were distributed: 20% data case, 20% midterm 1, 20% midterm 2 and 40% final. The exams were very fair and straight forward. If you went to class, read and understand the slides fully and did the practice problem, the exams were very straight forward (you actually dont really need to read the book except for the data case). The data case were long problem sets from the back of the chapter, there were 4 in total (5% each) and we ad ample time to do it.
The only problem was that there were major issues with the problem set and solution that he posted. The formatting became really weird and there were numerous mistakes in them (as well as many of the answers were very convoluted). I dont blame the professor for this because it was his first time teaching the course and these problem set were from the publisher themselves so hopefully next time he would fixed this. Also, for the one of the midterm, there were MAJOR issues with the grading. One of the TA was basically clueless and literally marked the exam all wrong. In some question where the question was answered perfectly correct, she gave me 0 point but luckily the professor fixed this so it was alright. Most people (and sure more than 50% of the class) had to ask for regrades and in most case got back a huge chunk of points (I actually felt really bad for the professor because he had to regrade all the exams himself one-by-one).
Overall, really enjoyed this class. I would say it was one of the more interesting 106 and the material was very straightforward. I would definitely recommend it to all BizEcons (and Econs).
This class honestly wasn't very memorable but would recommend for a low stress Econ elective. There wasn't that much content to the class and he always ended class like 15 minutes early. Convery is a very nice man but his lectures are very boring and it doesn't help that they're at 8 am. He stopped recording his lectures this quarter but he posts the notes and he usually just reads off the notes for lecture but occasionally mentions important things to focus on. There are 2 midterms and a final and you get one cheat sheet for each midterm and 2 cheat sheets for the final. This class is definitely one that you can cram for.
A little disappointed as the class itself and the material covered was very interesting and applicable to the real world. However, I will say the lectures were extremely boring with him just reading word for word off slides at 8am (He stopped recording this quarter). The exam questions also felt very poorly written as it was often a test of if you could understand what the questions were even asking. Also for some reason he would leave during the exams so I could never ask him to clarify what the questions were asking???? Average on the first midterm was about a 82.5, second midterm was about a 75, and the final was about an 80. He did curve to around an 86 average though. Just didn't seem like he really cared at all. Take this class with Ed Mcdevitt if you can.
Celtics Shaq, absolutely washed. Don't believe the grade distributions because the second midterm average was a 75, majority do not have an A- or above before the curve (if there even is one). His slides have a lot of unnecessary info you aren't even tested on, most boring lecturer ever, and the exams asks for relationships that were not covered previously because he was too busy talking about Trumponomics.
I am not sure if all these people took the exams online (or just exceptionally smart) but they're harder than his practice problems. I suggest finding some extra practice material online. The first midterm was easier than the second one, so work hard on that material since the final focuses a lot on the material from midterm 2. Try to make a good cheat sheet with all the graphs.
Class is honestly not that hard, but the exams are super short and worth a lot of your grades. If you miss a couple questions on the midterm, you automatically cannot get an A. Midterm was 45%, final was 45%. Average on midterm was 18/20, 29/33 on final. So basically each question is worth 1%-2% of your total grade. I don't believe there was a curve because of how high the average was. Homework is very easy, just basic Excel and PowerPoint, graded on completion.
Good class if your interested in learning more about finance. Def one of the more business applicable classes UCLA biz econ has to offer. Good prof and pretty chill tests. Def one of the best 106 requirements.
I really enjoyed taking this class! Professor Convery is very knowledgeable about the course material and ties it to real life examples as well. He records his lectures which is such a blessing. He's approachable and kind during office hours as well!
Professor Convery is a fantastic professor. You can tell he has mastered the course, cares about whether or not students grasp the material, and has clear and concise lectures. His lectures are very to the point and explain things in concrete ways using examples. His exams are straightforward, fair, and clear. He also provides practice midterms and finals which is great. Would definitely recommend this class to a friend. Super doable Econ upper div.
