I had him for WAC 22.

The class is out of 100pts. Do the readings because that's what you're tested on. Participate in discussion and go to lecture since that's part of your grade. There are two papers to do. Ask the TAs to edit them because they're grading them. Do this and you should do well.

I took polk for wrld art 22 and it was an interesting simple course. Polk has a modern teaching style and enjoys his subject very much so he makes it more interesting than, in my opinion, it actually is. This is a great class if your looking for a relaxed GE.

I had Polk for WAC 22. I would highly recommend this class as an easy GE. There's one midterm, two collection assignments (about 3-4 pages), reading quizzes (two out of three are announced), and a take home final. The TAs also offer a lot of extra credit. If you talk to your TA about the collection assignments, you'll do just fine. You basically just have to skim the readings (some are interesting) because he goes over the readings in class. The class is pretty interesting and Polk is a funny guy. I got an A and would really recommend the class.

*************I TOOK WORLD ARTS AND CULTURE 22 (WAC 22) INTRO TO AMERICAN FOLKLORE************

I took World Arts and Cultures 22 (WAC 22) with professor Polk and my T.A. was Anna B. Creagh. I have to say, this class was awesome! There are 5 quizzes that are 2-3 questions based on the readings. 4 announced and 1 pop quiz. (These arn't too bad, you just have to know the main ideas of the readings). There are two collection assignments about 3-5 pages. You just interview a informant about a topic discussed in class and do an analysis. Just talk to your T.A. if you need help. Anna was extremely helpful and gave us many examples and advice on how to do well. No biggie, just ask professor Polk or your T.A. for help. The midterm wasn't too bad. Just 2 questions with parts A. B. and C. they ask a question and you have to use course topics and readings to answer them. If you pay attention in class and skim the reading, you'll do fine. lastly the final is take home, so no biggie here either, just take your time on it and proofread. Oh and did I mention, Professor polk is a funny guy and plays videos in class??!! Honestly I had fun in this class and ended up with an A+. Don't get me wrong, you'll have to do some work, but in the end, its worth it and you'll realize that it was a very fun and interesting class. I highly recommend you take it!! I had polk for wac 22: intro to folklore. the class is semi interesting, and polk is pretty entertaining. the sections were horrible, all you do is watch youtube videos and the ta, nicole goude was AWFUL. the grading for this class is also outrageous, while the material is easy, they try to make it seem like it is a hard class and grade you down on stupid stuff. everyone claims it to be an easy A, but hardly anyone gets an A...

I had WAC 22 with Polk. It is a good class. So anyway, here are some things to do to get an A in this class:
1. [ Go to lecture. ]
Just do it. You don't have to take notes. You just have to be semi awake. Worried you will miss something he might put on an exam? Not to worry! He will EXPLICITLY tell you what is on the exam. Still don't believe me? The TA makes a study sheet about EVERYTHING you need to know for the test. Do you have to do the readings? Not if you go to class (BTW its an $80 reader)

2. [Not go to lecture and live off the study sheet.]
I know some of you are hardcore. I didn't forget about you guys (*wink*)

3. [ Do the collection assignments. ]
Just do it. It takes like an hour, if you "interview" someone "quickly" and "do" research about the piece of folklore they "told" you about. Send it to the TA to see if you are on the right track, otherwise you will lose a point.

That concludes the list. For grading, there are 100 total points, ie show up to section, 3 papers, midterm, and final. This is not difficult. Plus there is extra credit. Anyone should be able to pull of a B or higher in this class. I'm South campus, and I thought this class was easy, though i will admit i got a high B on the midterm. I just gave up reading books with lots of words, you know? I need books that show me how to manipulate numbers or books that will help me with my career. For North campus people and South campus majors who still read, they will totally destroy this class.
So go ahead and sign up. Be anxious no more. This is what you were looking for, and my review has confirmed your assumptions. There will be space for you, so second pass this cuz you cant first pass it anyway lol

Class taken: RELIGION 11

I think Prof. Polk is awesome and very knowledgeable. The class itself had some interesting materials (I mean who wouldn't want to learn about religion in a place like L.A.?), but the lectures did get a bit boring sometimes. He did present some cool videos, more so towards the end of the quarter. You can easily get an A (and he gives 3 extra credit opportunities). The class consisted of 3 essays and 1 take home final essay (due anytime during finals week). All of the essays weren't hard to do (as most were observational, and only one was research based). He doesn't allow you to use technology in class, so make sure to bring a notebook. Overall, I think this is an interesting class and I loved getting to know my city.

This was a really cool class and I thoroughly enjoyed professor Polk. Polk has been at UCLA for a really long time and he did a good job teaching this class objectively and then telling us his opinions about things separately. Polk was a really kind professor and his quizzes were really straightforward covering the readings which were really interesting. The assignments weren't hard and one of them was actually pretty cool because you just have to walk around an area (I chose westwood like many students) and talk about how religion manifests in the city. I thought this was a really cool class taught by an interesting professor and it was a great way to fulfill both the diversity requirement and a GE.
