Guggenberger is a horrible professor. I had him for Econ 41 in Spring 07, and got a B+. It was my first stats class ever.
Lecutre: Useless. I almost never went, except to turn it homework.
Book: I found the book (Introductory Statistics 6th ed by Mann) useful for solving some HW problems.
Homework: Hard. Some of his HW questions can't be solved using the book, so you absolutely have to go to discussion because the TAs will pretty much give you the solutions to his HW problems.
Exams: His midterm and final have questions that are very similar to his HW questions. He also allows you to use a cheat sheet and a calculator. On your cheat sheet, write down the basic formulas and stuff from the book. More importantly, look over your HW and find those problems which the book didn't discuss. Write down the solutions to those problems on your cheat sheet. It'll really help if your cheat sheet has not just notes but also solutions to problems you don't really know how to do.
Overall: This was my first stats class and Guggenberger can't teach to save his life, however it's not difficult to get a decent grade. His curve is generous, even though his syllabus says he doesn't curve.
Professor Guggenberger is the prime example of a "possible" genius who has no clue how to teach. The man speaks a billion languages, has multiple PHDs, but cannot teach a simple statistics class. How does UCLA allow such a horrible lecturer to teach? Unless you want a C in the class do not waste your time.
what the fuck is wrong with this guy??? he should not be allowed to teach. i highly recommend to not take this guy. he cant teach, he has an accent, and it completely pointless to go to lecture. you'll see after the first midterm that more than half of the students do not come to class. and your worried half the time (or atleast i was) that your gonna fail and get kicked out of the major. his grading goes something like this. 20% homework, 30% midterm, and 50%final. if you do better on the final its worth 80. so i end up getting a c+ in the class and was actually happy. JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY
This was a difficult class. The book was not helpful at all, except for going over material that was not clearly presented in the lecture notes. He uses material that is not from the text, so you really have to be at every lecture. The TA Sessions saved me in this class. The Lecture Notes that he posted were helpful for definitions, but absolutely unhelpful for examples. There were no problems worked through in ANY of the lecture notes. He is obviously an incredibly smart man, but I thought his skills at teaching were lacking. He used a very mathematical approach, and sometimes that hindered my understanding of the underlying subject matter.
The professor's lectures are very ineffective. Trying to learn math by powerpoint slides doesn't cut it. The slides are not good (puled from the book that is not very good). He didn't let us use calculators and exprected us to calcuate pretty diffult formulas by hand. What is the learning in that? I just learned to memorise the forumlas to ace the test. The accent doesn't really help either. Overall, its an easy course if you had AP Stas or can learn on our own. Don't expect him to teach you much. Also the econ part of the course is highly misleading. Nothing about it is really related to econ. THis school needs to look to other school with a real undergrad business degreee on how to strcuture courses that help managers make real decisions not this useless theoretical material
This class is a breeze if you've taken AP stats. It didn't even cover as much material as I learned in high school. Lectures are basicially unnecessary if you remember the basics and do the homework. Best way to study for tests is practice, practice, practice. If you HAVEN'T taken AP stats or another stats class, I hear this class is VERY difficult. The test averages were pretty low. The prof is not very good at explaining or teaching, though he does like to make jokes now and then. Not exactly the best stats teacher.
Lectures are horrible, everything is pulled straight from the book. The book itself, is too wordy and not concise. Tests are ridiculously hard. The TA's are terrible too. bad at explaining and have thick foreign accents. don't take this class unless you have a prior understanding of stats.
This guy is the worst prof. in the world. I hated this class. Not only were the lectures boring and the book useless, the tests were nothing like the homework or the practice exams. Do not take this class with this professor.
