Professor Davies is the best psych professor I've ever had. Most of my previous psych professors have taken very interesting material and managed to make it dull. Davies makes the lectures so interesting, everyone I've talked to look forward to his lecture every week. I'm sad that its thanksgiving weekend and there won't be a lecture this week! Yes, that is how engaging, funny, and totally informative and interesting his lectures are. You don't realize as you're taking notes that not only are you fully enjoying yourself, you are learning! He takes the subject and makes it relate to his students, relating it to current events in the world, social phenomenon, and even events on the UCLA campus. His discussions make you think and wonder, laugh out loud and cry at the sometimes preposterous behavior of human beings. If you do not take Professor Davies, you are missing out on the UCLA experience. This is exactly what I came here for.
This class was one of the most engaging classes I've taken at UCLA. Prof. Davies really makes this class fun. You have to study for this class. The only way you will do well in this class is if you read the book and know the stuff from the lectures. The class wasn't curved. The mean for the midterm (there was only 1) was like 50/58 but it doesn't really matter since there's no curve. Like other people have said, the class itself is fun but you still need to do the work.
i absolutely loved professor davies and this class. i think it was the combindation of professor davies great personality and the interesting material that made it so great. i looked forward to going to class and was actually sad to see it end, the only time that has happened to me. it's not THAT easy of an A though, you will have to read and know the material well for the exams. but seriously, take this class!!
Professor Davies is for sure the best teacher I have had so far at UCLA. He is very dedicated and caring about the well-being of his students. He is very helpful in office hours and will dedicate all the time necessary to help you through the material. His exams are fair and cover a lot of material, but it is not that bad. He is a funny guy and really makes this class enjoyable. I looked foward to attending his class every week. I wish he was teaching more classes. Highly recommend him, he is a great professor!
Professor Davies is one of the best professors at UCLA. Like others have said, he has a natural talent for lecturing. He's funny and entertaining and gives great examples to help us understand the material. Two hour lectures never went by so fast, and I'm a dork for saying so, but I was kinda sad when the quarter was over. The midterm was really easy but the final was very tricky...it brought me down to an A-. Tests are based on lecture material and the text. He offers 2% extra credit through experimetrix and the class is not curved. The only bad thing about his class was that he will not post his slides online so you have to do a lot of copying during class. I guess it helped me stay awake. Overall, highly recommended.
Wonderful class, effective professor. Even though my class was virtually 2-2.5 hours long, Professor Davies made it interesting. He has a natural knack for lecturing. One of the best lecturers I've ever had. The midterm was super-easy. I aced it. However, the final was extremely difficult. It pissed me off. So if you think you're getting an A after the midterm, think again! Do the readings, and understand them. Know the vocabulary. You absolutely will not do well if you don't.
Bust out the doors, cuz Paul is coming through. I absolutely loved his class. It was the first class he was teaching at UCLA and he did a great job. He has such a great sense of humor. He is always available if you need him. I remember in office hour, he even stayed overtime to go over some questions I had for the midterm. I really don't like when professors disappear when the midterm date comes around (hint ,hint). My friend told me to take Lieberman cuz he was a great prof but ,Paul is equally (if not better) as good. The material in itself is very interesting and i am glad it's a core class.
Tests: fair, if you study the material you will do fine . Learn the GENERAL material he is emphasizing in lecture. Two MC tests. No curve. Some people in class were pissed off about it. But I believe that if professors effectively test what they mean to there is no reason for a curve. Is there? (kinda like validity)
Lecture: fun, interesting, engaging (whole class was asking/answering his question).. all that good stuff!! The only thing I was kinda annoyed about was that he didn't post the lectures online. So he didn't cover as much information in lecture (as compared to the book) ...but you still had to know all that info. He has this tendency to provide his own anecdote to the lecture that help you remember some of the material. The way he teaches it is easily applicable to real life situations. For example, how caresalesmen try to weedle more money out of you once you have already commited to buying a car. These concepts learned in class will be with me in the long run.
Discussion: Josh (my TA) was pretty good. He was kinda laid back. As long as you read the articles and participated in discussion ur fine. Make sure YOU REALLY READ the article though..its gonna be on the test.
There is like 2% Extra credit for participating in the experimatrix. I got the avg grade (B+, was just 2% away or something but I'm still happy). Overall, a great class with a great prof. give it a shot.
Had professor Davies for social psychology 135. He is funny, nice, exciting, good lecturer (best lecturer actually @ UCLA)~ his lectures are sooo exciting and fun although it was his first time teaching social psychology when I took his class. After taking his class, I am sure that I want to go into social psychology after I graduate. The material we learnt about was so interesting that it allowed me to have a different perception of how people interact in society. His tests are not that easy. I went to every single lecture, did his 3 credit experimetrix, read the whole book...I actually studied a lot for this class and I got an A-..this grade was from doing all this work..so if you're one of those people who do not read, then it would be hard to get an A...but a lot of the materials from his lectures are in the tests, so that might help. 60 multiple choice questions. It's not those "definition memorization" tests, but you must fully understand those definitions in order to get those questions right.
I highly recommend Professor Davies. I wish I could take another class with him but he said that he would only be teaching social psych and graduate programs in the near future..=/
