I think most of the positive reactions to prof. rosenthal are because he is an easy grader. There's definitely something to be said for that. But my god, I did not think it was possible to learn as little or be as bored as I was in this class.
His theories about persuasive communication are simple and could be explained in about five minutes. Instead he rambles on for the whole quarter with elaborate stories which are very interesting but have nothing to do with the material. Or if they were relevant, he didn't explain how and I found myself confused. Plus I just didn't find his theories convincing--he doesn't give any evidence and some of what he says goes against everything you learn about political communication and mass media in other classes.
I feel bad saying all these things because he's a really nice guy and interesting to talk to. He feels like everybody's grandfather. That makes him cool, but I wouldn't want to take a class taught by my grandpa.
The good thing about his class is if you can manage to find his argument hidden somewhere in the stories, it's easy to get a good grade. The class was all based on midterm and final which are just true or false and are graded with a hefty curve.

He is a great professor!! One of my favorites here!! The cclasses are interesting and he is really good at explaining the material. The tests can be challenging, but with studying it is possible to achieve a good grade. I got A+s in both of his classes, so it is do-able! Take his classes!!!

prof rosenthal is one of the best lecturers i have had at UCLA. he's a storyteller...he illustrated his points with witty stories and examples that helped explain his points, which i thought was a very effective technique. coming into the class, i was a little intimidated because he did have pretty high marks for "difficulty," however, if you take good notes (jotting down even his seemingly insignificant stories) and go to every lecture, an A is very doable. the only downfall to prof rosenthal was that he didn't seem to care much for his students. before the midterm, he told us that he would hold office hours for us to go over some last minute material. but when a couple of us arrived, he said he was too busy with other students from another class and told us we could only ask him one QUICK question (which lasted about 30 seconds). so if you're looking for a more personable professor, rosenthal would not be your choice. however, he is an effective lecturer and you do leave the class having learned a lot.
