Terrible just whatever you do avoid this class at all costs. Insane time constraints for exams especially due to remoteness. Extremely impersonal and unwilling to help. When asked questions gets super rude.
Midterms and final are WAY more technical than what he talks about in class. His lectures are concept-heavy, but his tests are almost completely math. The OWL system can be irritating and noncooperative as well. He wasn't terrible, but as my very first college class I would've preferred something more... easy.
If you are reading it, it's too late.... or maybe not
Truth be told you are either reading this because you are thinking about signing up for this class because of the convenient time schedule or because you are in Week 1 trying to see what you got yourself into.
1) if you considering signing up for this class, go back to your class planner and change to a different teacher (perhaps Li) ASAP.
2) If you have signed up for his class, may only the best come your way.
He is a straight douchebag who has no intention of being a teacher. He is here for the money and to screw around with students. He is completely demoralizing, lecturing on BS half the time. His OWL hw is so time consuming, but is not relevant at all.
I came into UCLA somewhat liking Chem, though I am an engineering major. After these 10 weeks of hell, I absolutely hate it. This class is a waste of time, only to kill GPAs and life itself.
He will not go over material for midterms or finals. If he is ahead of schedule, he will blow my any review and move onto future chapters that won't even be on the upcoming midterm. (In my case, midterm 1 was on Chapter 1-3. By the time the midterm came, he was on Chapter 6 already)
To students considering this class, please just take the hit for time and don't take his class.
To students in his class.
1) prepare to live in hell for 10 weeks
2) PLEASE USE THE TEST BANK. midterms are very similar form year to year, so look at past tests as much as possible
3) review OWL hw problems. Not all are on it, but some, especially in the end of chapter review questions are.
4) relax. your GPA will probably take a hit, but its not the end. You will not fail this class and need to retake it. I barely passed, but that's because I stopped giving a crap. Felker wasn't worth my time to stress over.
All in all, avoid him. He is the worst teacher I have ever had, and I am surprised UCLA hasn't fired his ass. PLEASE JUST RELAX. Taking a C in this class is not the end. We have quarters for a reason. One and done. After one quarter of him, its a fresh start.
Good luck and may only the best come your way!
Felker explains the concepts relatively well. However, his tests are all math-based. Not once did he work out any problems on the board during lecture, or even mention key equations and strategies for solving problems.
He uses OWL for homework. The midnight deadlines are irritating, but the problems are... kind of similar? to what's on the tests. Your best bet is to look through the book problems and do those over and over.
Ah, Felker.
This guy was pretty bad, and a complete douchebag (i.e. call out people in class and embarass them). The homework was extremely time consuming, and he seemed to really emphasize Schrodinger's equations in the latter half of the course and he made almost zero sense (and it covered a good part of the final).
There are three exams:
1) The first midterm, usually with an average of 80%. If you can find one of his old midterms, you will do well, just copy that onto your cheat sheet.
2) Second midterm is a little harder, but still very manageable. Again, just copy the stuff on old midterms on your cheat sheet. Average is around 70%.
3) The final. All I can say is God save you. This was a horrible final and when I took the course two years ago, I recall it was so hard, a few people walked out in tears unable to handle the stress of the exam.
If Scerri or Gelbart are available, they're definitely better than this guy, but if you must take Felker, then don't count on his lectures, and find his old exams and mostly centralize your preparations on them. The TA's weren't all that great either, as for the few discussions I went to, there would always be a some guy that corrects the TA.
