Narin's a nice professor, but his midterm is ridiculously hard. He states that of the three modules in PS111A, his module was the easiest... riiiiight. Not only was his exam difficult, but it was insanely stupid... his cross word puzzle didn't make any sense at all and was poorly made up. His midterm didn't cover much materials he emphasized during lecture, while he tested us on materials that were covered maybe in one or two slides. Not cool.... I wish he didn't teach any PS classes.
Narins is a FANTASTIC lecturer. However, like previously mentioned, his exam was unlike any other. It was beyond difficult and seemed completely irrelevant to most of the concepts he discussed in class. The concepts that he emphasized were not even on the exam, whereas those that he brushed over were weighed heavily. The crossword puzzle was beyond frustrating, as some of the given definitions were vague, and many of the terms were not emphasized in lecture or the slides. Overall, I still recommend him as a professor, but be prepared for a tough and bizarre exam.
Narins is a great lecturer; he makes difficult concepts very easy to understand and doesn't rush through material or speak too fast. he is GREAT at explaining things and randomly throws in jokes here and there just to keep the atmosphere light. His exam however, was pretty hard and when I say that, I mean when I walked into the exam, I felt like I had a great grip on all the material and could solve problems fine (you have to memorize all values and equations from his slides..basically memorize everything on his slides) but I walked out of the exam feeling like it was the worst exam I have taken since my first year here when I had no idea how to study. The crossword puzzle was probably what made most people lose points, as there were a few words that didn't fit into the given spaces and there was one answer that had appeared ONCE (and wasn't mentioned in lecture) in one slide out of all 6 lectures. got a B without the sliding scale curve or whatever that is ( apparently the sliding scale is only used at the end of the course when you've taken all 3 exams) and the avg was 69.6 or something like that. Judging on what others have written on this in the past, he gives fair exams for the most part, but the one this year was really hard for many of us. still, i definitely recommend him as a professor! You really do learn a lot and he goes over it slowly so that you really know the information inside and out, which really helps in later courses
Midterm left out entire concepts which he deliberated in class repeatedly. I think our year may have been a fluke. He is an excellent professor at explaining things, but his exam emphasized only a few concepts and completely left out certain concepts that he spent SO LONG on. The test does not reflect the focus of the class. It had a crossword puzzle with multiple errors and obscure/irrelevant questions, and it didn't focus on the most important concepts he taught us. Very good professor at explaining, but bizarre/pointless exam.
Prof. Narins is one of the few good professors I had at UCLA. His lectures are well organized and he really teaches you everything you need for the midterm. No need to look at the book. Average for my midterm was 75% which is not bad. His test, like he said is fair. Just make sure you know the lectures really well and memorize everything in it. He also asks weird EC questions on his tests, like geography stuff because his son does something on the field. Overall, he's a great lecturer and friendly at office hours
