I studied with much effort and dedication and despite all the work and time I had committed to this course alone, i received a grade that was much inferior to my classmates' grades (I should note, by the way, that these classmates hardly studied). I know that the grading system of professor nonacs is unfairly biased and rigged (the hardly-studying students just went to office hours and got As). Even though I did not attend oh other than 4 or so times (work schedule often conflicted with oh times), I know I studied more than these other classmates **and I should note that I'm not referring to all the classmates, but only to these specific acquaintances**
Not only is his grading system very biased, but his tests are too tricky and confusing. You need to pay attention to the utilized words and the wording/syntax of the question because nonacs intentionally makes his exams by means of asking u tricky questions, essentially tricking you.
Save your time and GPA and stay away from this pretentious, condescending, egotistical bigot!

I wish I listened to bruinwalk the reviews below did not lie.. the material is simple enough as well as the papers but the quizzes are like trick questions that even the TA didn’t know the answer to. the average for the first test was 79% and the final was 69% and no one got an A on either test. the class was wild i took it along with biochem and eeb 100 was more stressful

Tough tests, but not too bad overall. Consisted of reading 1-ish paper per week. If you have a pulse the weekly quizzes were each a gimme. Had Dr Larison for the 2nd half, and her lectures were lowkey dog$*** I cannot lie. Interesting class, I learned a lot.

What can I say about my boy Nonacs, hmm well this class was hella hard. You get a cheat sheet for the midterm/final, but that won't really help much since his exams are hard as shit! To make matters worse, he makes you read a bunch of articles that are super long and hard to understand (such as the gut microbiota paper). Definitely don't take him if you're aiming for a B or higher as he doesn't curve

This was by far the most insane class I have ever taken. The tests are killer. For reference, this is about three times harder than biochem. Be careful if you want to take this class.

Nonacs is a great professor because his lectures are clear and concise. Most of the time the topics were interesting , although I would still zone out at times. His "Ain't Nature Grand" segments are interesting, and a good break from testable material. He doesn't require you to attend lecture and it is podcasted, but I still went to lecture. My biggest complaint is the amount and length of required readings. Be prepared to read 3-4 scientific articles a week, between 10 and 20 pages long on average (and yes they are tested on so you can't avoid reading them). The class is split first 5 weeks ecology and last 5 weeks behavior, with final like a second midterm and not cumulative. Best advice I have is to STUDY HARD and do well on the midterm, because the midterm and final are weighted equally, so if you do fair on the midterm it is hard to bring your grade up with the final.

I don't know what this guys is like when teaching other classes, but at least for EEB 100 I thought he was pretty great. The lectures are engaging because he incorporates his sense of humor and sometimes he'll give us a break with his "Ain't Nature Grand" talks. Tests are tricky because it's purely short answer and T/F, but definitely do-able. Biggest perk is that he doesn't require a textbook, but be prepared to read A TON of articles (some of them ridiculously long).

This class is fun but boring. He makes jokes which are nice material is not always to great but he gives a break by given random facts that are pretty cool. Like we have certain organisms who use us as their home. Anyways for studying do use the readings he assigns he test on those and also the slides. Extra notes on the slides aren't necessary since he only really test what is on the slides but to understand it you may want those notes. His exams are free response and multiple choice. Not to difficult i'd say.
