The workload is on the heavier side and the guidelines/suggestions she makes on essays tend to be more confusing than helpful. It was pretty much an easy A but the work was mostly busy work (mostly graded for completion) and super time consuming. Unless you ask specically what she means, you'll rarely know specifically what she wants. I made the mistake of assuming I knew what the guidelines were asking me the first time because she basically made me rewrite the entire essay because I didn't include specific details that she wanted even though they weren't listed explicitly. And on another essay, she gave us two different thesis topics we could write about, but apparently I picked the wrong one. What I mean by the wrong one, it was the one that she didn't believe was the right answer so I left all of my analysis the same but changed the topic to the one she wanted. Got an A on that paper.
All of the comments for her previously got erased, but most, if not all, spoke negatively of her. When I took the class, I didn't know Bruinwalk was a thing. But when I checked her out after the quarter, I found that I agreed with everything people said. Even down to the point where she made some questionable comments that many would consider racist. Maybe she's changed, but it's what I experienced.
A very easy engcomp 3 class w/ a heavy workload. Fretz gives out that typical highschool English teacher vibes, especially in a classroom with about 20 students enrolled per class; also she gets sidetracked a lot lol. I wouldn't say the materials were that hard to complete, but they were just extremely annoying, time-taking, and irrelevant. Fretz frequently makes us submit reading logs and annotated outlines that make you waste so much time on such boring stories, even more if you procrastinate to do it few hours before it is due like me. I don't think she realizes that people have other homework to do and making us complete such time-consuming assignments, especially between the Monday and Wednesday lectures on the same week, is stressful. However, I would say the materials are very easy to understand, and the writings and papers on family and love stories can get interesting in a way. You're probably gonna think the class materials are irrelevant and meaningless to invest your time and money to learn, but honestly it is a very easy class to get an A and get your engcomp 3 & diversity requirement done.
Just your run of the mill English Comp class. I didn't feel strongly about it one way or another. The essay topics were kinda boring and we spent a lot of time working on improving the same assignments. It could have been worse though. I liked the small class size because I think it brought everyone closer together by the end of the course. Dr. Fretz could be confusing at times, but she clearly cared about her students' success because she would meet with people outside of the classroom a lot. All in all, not too bad.
The essays that you are assigned in this class might be boring, which is about family love stories( I've heard that she has stuck with this topic since she started to teach.) However, this class is definitely an easy A cause I believe most of the work is graded by completion not accuracy and as long as you follow her suggestions when revising.
