Robinson must be a good teacher. He kept me engaged in a smelly, ugly classroom for 3 hours on beautiful summer afternoons. He's not exactly the best lecturer in the world but he gets the job done. The material is what's most interesting. I hate science, I took his class as a Science GE and it was really more current events/history than Science (Bioterrorism and history of infections etc). The amount of work and the reading were minimal. The tests were definately on the tricky side and required memorization of every last word in the course reader, but if the tests weren't hard the class would be a joke. So I guess he had to make them difficult (see Chris Roberts - comparable difficulty level) Finally, I had the privelege of taking Robinson for the very last time he will ever teach at UCLA. The MIMG department is no longer offering GE classes so Robinson is out. He will be teaching some MIMG classes for UCLA in extension, but that isn't really useful for current students. So if you're reading this you missed out on a pretty good teacher, who more importantly taught the least Science oriented Science GE. It's a blow to all us North campus majors.
One of the most interesting and easy classes at UCLA if you're not a science whizz. The tests were a piece of cake, just attend lecture and do the readings, and this class is an easy A. He's a great lecturer, a little kooky at times, but thats refreshing. Take this class, you won't regret it.
Robinson is one of the best professors you will ever have. He cares A LOT about his students and treats them like peers, not subordinates. His lectures feel more like conversations and stories than lectures. His love for this subject shows, and he shares his passion in a very eloquent and interesting way. The class is easy -- just study everything! (Simply memorization.)
Unfortunately, he'll be leaving after the summer, and he may never return to teach this course. If you do ever have a chance to take a course with him, DO IT!
I wholeheartedly disagree with the comment below. I wish all professors taught with the passion and the candor Robinson does.
Bioterrorism was one of the most interesting classes I've taken so far. You learn a lot about different diseases, and Robinson's lectures are really fun and enjoyable. He's passionate about what he teaches, a characteristic that transfers over to his students. The midterm and final are each worth 50% of your total grade, so there isn't much room for error. I took really detailed notes, studied hard for the exams, and ended up with a B+. All of his lectures are online, which is convenient in case you can't make it. MIMG 12 is a really great course. Robinson said he might not be able to teach it again, so take it while you still have the opportunity!
He's really great, like everyone else has said here. He is the first professor that has made me not only want to come class, but also feel like I'm missing out if I don't. Take micro 12 if you need a GE. Take it if you don't. Just take one of his classes. It's necessary for your college academic life. His tests aren't tricky at all, very straight-forward. Everything is presented, you just need to study and apply it.
Honestly, the best class I have taken at UCLA so far. I am defiantly not a science person but this class was s much fun. Professor Robinson is hilarious in class and he does care about his students. Our class was on bruin cast, which could cause laziness but I went to class anyway just because it was that much fun. The midterm and final both count for 50% but they are not hard and the final is not cumulative. This class has actually made me interested in the subject and im going to pursue other classes regarding the topic. Great Class. Excellent Professor. TAKE THIS CLASS!!! o yea and the book we had to read, The Cobra Event was awesome, I didn\355t want to put it down.
Professor Robinson is one of the best professors at UCLA. This class is truly invaluable. I'm a science major. To be honest, this A I earned in MIMG 12 is much more valuable than the A I earned in LS1. This class teaches you material that you will remember for the rest of life (as well as potentially life saving information). Furthermore, he is hilarious and makes the class so much fun. I realy have no idea how he can rub off some really "unintelligent" questions. Now that I think of it, I really miss this class more than I expected. Highly recommend anyone to take this class, especially next quarter as Spring 07 may be the last time this class is offered. Somebody should nominate this man for the teaching award! There's a reason why he received a standing ovation during the last day of lecture as well as the review session.
This professor is simply amazing, what more could you ask for in a professor, the material is easy, he makes the class lively and interactive for all, he is a family man (He makes several references to his young boy, which just shows how compassionate he is about life), he is a fair tester on material and best of all you walk out with an A in his class.
You definatley need to take professor Robinson, he is the bomb.
Dr. Robinson's class is great. He's an excellent lecturer and very passionate about what he teaches. Graded materials consist of a midterm and non-cumulative final (each 50% of your grade). For the midterm just know everything in the reader and you should ace it (not as hard as it sounds). I haven't taken the final yet but I assume it's the same thing. If you can take him, do so... it's highly worth it.
I've never been a huge fan of science (econ major), but every student should take one of his classes. I haven't finished this quarter yet, but the lectures are interesting. Like someone else said below, I hate NOT going to lecture. Do yourself a favor and take one of his classes. He really cares about his students and his tests aren't difficult if you just show up to class.
