Econ 103 is a class a lot of people leave last, and Rojas is usually the recommended teacher for the course, but the class itself is complicated if you don't have a solid understanding of stats. I had a horrible experience and deadbeat professor for 41 and still managed to pull through. The curve was helpful, but then again it can go either way with these things.
I recommend that you download all the slides from the lab lecture and the TA sites and go over them three times a day--maybe after every meal? Rojas is an excellent teacher; the lectures were at a good pace until the end where he tried to squeeze a whole chapter and a half and then used it for the final! Otherwise, it is a fun class if you enjoy math and stats, but I would use every source you could get your hands on!
Professor Rojas seemed like the obvious choice for Econ 103, but I was dead wrong. At the beginning of the quarter he announced that he would no longer be collecting homework for a grade, and changed the grading format to 25% for two midterms (50% total) and 50% on the final. He taught the material at a good pace at first, but then after week 5 he started accelerating out of nowhere. He would attempt to hold review sessions, but would never be able to because of "scheduling conflicts." He does not respond to any e-mails, and barely puts in effort outside of the class for students to understand the material. On the last day of lecture, he used the last half of the class to cover a whole chapter of new material which he said would show up on the final.
Best professor in the Econ department. He is clear, extremely organized, and so nice/approachable at office hours or after class. He makes such difficult material easy to understand, and is really fair on his exams. The average on the first midterm was a 64% but he said it was lower this quarter because this quarter he did not count homework as a grade, so many people just looked at homework solutions instead of attempting the homework first and then checking if they did it correctly. So a suggestion would be to do the homework on your own first and then check solutions he posts later. You have discussion problems, homework problems, and chapter review questions to work on every week, and although they are not collected for a grade, it can be very time consuming. Midterm 1 is 25%, midterm 2 is 25% and final is 50%. Great class! Just wait to take 103 with Professor Rojas, he usually teaches in winter quarter and he is amazing!
Professor Rojas's 103 is overrated. He was good at explaining the class material for sure; however, he did not make any additional effort to accommodate the large-class size. There were roughly around 360 students in the class, but he had an hour and a half I think? office hours per week. There were many students coming to his and other TA's office hours, so it was very difficult to ask questions and learn.
Also, TA's graded exams pretty darn strictly and weirdly.. On the midterm, I multiplied -2 instead of 2, and I got -7 off for that.. I talked to the TA who graded it and she would not give me anymore partial credit than 1 (so I didn't take it)..
But I would say, still, the workload is pretty light and curve was generous... Only two people scored above 90 on the final, with highest score being 92, so I would say that the exams were not specifically easy.
Econ 103 and Econ 103L are the classes using Statistics knowledge at Economics Department. The good thing to learn Econ 103 with Professor Rojas is that he has a very descent knowledge of Stats and often make the points very clear to non-stats major students. Besides, he is very polite and helpful both during his class and his office hours. He likes to make sure every students are clear on the subjects. If you attend his lectures (highly recommended, very clear) and do the exercises, you should be find on the midterm and finals as they are pretty straightforward. Highly recommended :) Professor Rojas is the BEST Professor ever! I would love to take more classes with him.
