Damn. You ever read the reviews of a professor and like 99.9% talk about how garbage the professor is? But then you go on 'my class planner' and find out that that's your only option for the class?
Seriously thought these reviews were just over exaggerated or something, but y'all this professor really does SUCK big time. This class gives the chicano department a bad name. Why does the department think bringing this celebrity to campus is such an innovative idea?? Jesus, even I could teach this class better. Only focus was: 1) Trump (pretty sure he himself said he was obsessed with him 2)CHINAAAA and 3) Trade wars (which no one had a single clue what he was talking about).
Not only is his teaching TERRIBLE, but just imagine all the freshmen kissing his butt by laughing at his "jokes" and buttering him up.
Aside from his teaching, he was incredibly unorganized and had a huge lack of miscommunication, to the extent that even my TA said a lot of the things he would do/ say, they did not agree with.
He would always talk about "me me me" "Oh they love me in China" (dude, how is that possible when there are 1 BILLION PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE), "Oh i'm going on this trip for this conference blah blah but don't worry I'll be back"- NO, you are a PROFESSOR and your LECTURES should be your priority. But of course, this self-centered man, who went off to say he's given speeches in front of border patrol who BEGGED him (yeah, he said that) to come and gave him a STANDING OVATION (*insert 'and everybody clapped' meme*)
Also, shoutout to my TA ROSA, who is an absolute Godsend and I assure I would have gone crazy in this class if it wasn't for her.
Avoid this professor at all costs. Not worth your time. No wonder only 1/4 of the class goes now.
I was honestly disappointed at how this class turned out. A few weeks into the quarter I stopped paying attention to his lectures. They're usually on the same, rambling tangent, he uses the same slides, and he talks about himself sO much! He often talks about how he worked at Stanford, knew some political figures, is really influencing something or the other, and he probably is, but I feel like he sees this class as another way to add another notch under his belt of things he can brag about. Man, I've never met someone so self-centered!
When talking about the final (it was take home) and other assignments he was super vague and just waved us off to our TAs for questions instead of him. The professor. Honestly, my TA Rosa is the reason I'm passing this course, she really broke down the readings (which are super long) and assignments and sympathized with how disorganized the professor could be. I definitely learned more about the class and all of its concepts during my TA section than I did in class. It's good for an easy GE, but if you truly care about Chicano Studies, I do not recommend.
After hearing about what a big shot this man was for his work with immigration and immigrant communities (he comes out on Univision every now and then) I was so excited to take a class with him. I walked away extremely disappointed. We spent the entire quarter on one or two sets of powerpoints that made no sense and it was always him going off about how he knows influential people, is apparently world famous, and "me, me, me, me, me..." To talk about how truly bad his bragging was, he would take phone calls in front of the whole class (apparently by powerful people) and even had a news camera crew interview him in front of us. Attendance got so low towards the end of the quarter that he would resort to forcing students to come by passing around sign in sheets and even going as far as threatening us with a pop quiz and didnt even give it to us at the end of lecture. TAs were also no help. He is easily the worst professor I have ever had at UCLA. Whoever hired him really needs consider student education over their own or their department's aggrandizement. SHAME ON YOU!
Took him for chicano 10b and he basically focused on 2 things - an angry rebuttal to some weird professor at Harvard named Professor Huntington, and global economies. He's a really nice guy, but I think he probably has A.D.D. He's easily distracted by other thoughts and will go off on tangents, totally losing focus on what he's supposed to be teaching. I think most of his slides are from his other work outside of UCLA, but he uses them anyway and pretends they were meant for the class. Long boring lectures - again, not the least bit focused. Our last test contained LOTS of stuff that were never emphasized in class - even his T.A.'s knew it. If you take this class, pray that your T.A. knows he's nuts and will sympathize with you when they grade. The good side - most of the assigned papers are opinion-based so its hard to give you a bad grade since there's no wrong or right answer. The only one that you actually COULD fail was that last test I already mentioned. Again, he's a cool guy - probably just needs some medication to stay focused. He's very passionate about global economies and very angry about Professor Huntington at Harvard.
Prof. Hinojosa was not clear in his lectures & used the same 2 slides throughout the quarter. Work was easy, but the class did not prepare me much for the exams/essays. If you take this class you’re going to rely on your TA a lot. Luckily, I had a helpful TA who was organized unlike Hinojosa.
I feel as if I didn't learn anything from this class unless it was about the professor. All he did was tell us about his trips, awards, movies he's in, and other accomplishments that aren't important to our education. He had no structure when he lectured and one time he gave the same lecture twice. He used the same PowerPoint throughout almost the whole quarter. The TA's also had no clue what was happening but just tried their best to help us. I honestly only learned something about Chicanx studies when I did some of the reading assignments. I really don't recommend this class. Anyone who has had this professor would tell you the same
Really bad professor! I went to lecture and attempted to take notes and at first, I thought I was being distracted. But no, this professor is just really bad. He talks about himself and how he comes out on TV shows and gets all these awards. His classes were genuinely terrible but thanks to my TA Rosa, she was very helpful and gave us a lot of opportunities to maintain a high grade.
oh my gosh, this class is one that I will never forget
Cons: unclear lectures, professor goes off on tangents like every 5 seconds, gives out like 60+ pages of readings per week expecting us to know ALL OF IT, unclear slides (while explaining a concept, he will skip over 10 slides, show a graph, and then skid back like 3 slides and talk about a whole new concept), the pdf of the readings suck, I would advise the textbook instead, the slides are not posted, the lectures are not recorded, the study guides for the midterm sucked. The midterm was terrible. He wanted about 8-10 pages of writing under an hour with numerous citations from readings he never went over in class. the TAs were just as lost as the students and the professor lacked communication skills.
took this class wanting to learn more about chicanx communities, but came out even more lost than when I went in
pros: you can skip lecture and not have to worry about missing ANYTHING important, you'll be fine. you don't need to do all the readings if you A) divide the work between a small group of friends or b) if you get a cool TA, you can probably go over the important readings in class (my discussions would have presentations about the important readings), another pro: this class is an easy A, the TAs understand that you're lost and that this class is confusing af, so they'll grade with soooooo much more leniency, and last but not least: the final is a take home essay graded hella easy, no one got less than an A- on the final essay
Dr. Hinojosa is a great professor who genuinely cares about his students. I took his course during Winter 2015, Chicano 10B in which he provided great insights regarding the conditions of Mexican-Americans in the United States. He is one of the few faculty member that is actively involved in helping undocumented groups of people. I would recommend his course!
