Quarter: Spring 2019
Grade: A
July 11, 2019

I took Chicano 119 and 122 with Professor Hinajosa-Ojeda. He really cares about his student's learning but is also really unorganized. For both of these courses, I was more interested in working on a creative piece so I grouped up with the film group that addresses issues within the undocumented population in LA. Readings assigned for his class are posed on CCLE so no need to purchase books. There are about 4 writing assignments for this class and one big final project. No tests.

The students' advice is accurate.

Hinojosa's class is a waste of time and UCLA's money. Hinjosa does not care about his students. He showed the same slides from day 1 to the last day of class. He goes off on tangents and is horrible about getting a simple point across. He assigns students into four different groups. He is interested in students conducting his field research. I hope when he publishes his work he credits each and every one of us because we're the ones who did his work.

He showed up late to class, unannounced, very often. Once, he did not come into class till about an hour in. The students took it upon themselves to use the time to meet in groups and discuss group projects.

The class started with about 50 students, then half of them dropped.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, EVEN IF IT FITS BEST ON YOUR SCHEDULE.

His class is not an easy 'a' either. It's a lot of work; projects, papers, field research, presentations, etc.

Wow, this guy is as bad as everyone says. I honestly thought people were exaggerating or were angry they received poor grades, but no, take this from a student who got a good grade: he does not care about his students AT ALL. Sure, he is a genius in his field (not to mention famous), however, what good is that if he is disorganized and doesn't make the course's purpose clear throughout the entire quarter? In fact, the first 6 weeks he kept on saying "and this is what this class is about" blah blah blah as if it was the first day. I appreciate Raul for the things he does for our Latino communities, but I am utterly disappointed at the lack of appreciation he has for his students. Even if you receive a decent grade, you'll still be frustrated looking back at the quarter taken with this guy. He always tries to make his students feel like they are an integral component of his research that will empower Latino communities, yet he is just interested about his own stuff. I think you all get the picture by now

Raul is such an interesting person. Yes, he talks a lot. Yes, his lectures go way off topic. He is actually very nice and approachable if you make an effort to speak with him one on one. He is a very busy guy but still tries to make time for his students. He also does invite students to BBQs at his house in Venice...Don't know any other professor that does that.
