DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS with Amar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
105D material is inherently difficult to capture, but Amar makes it even more difficult by not engage the material clearly. He barely know technology, including writing on surface / iPad, which makes taking a class with him a terrible experience. He talks really slowly and without a focus on what is important, he goes everywhere. The homework is A LOT and was BARELY RELATED to the material covered in class. Half of the equations used on homework does not even appear in class lectures, nor was covered by class examples, so you have to read tedious textbook for answers. You will take roughly 8 hours per homework to finish them. The exams are tricky and he is ALWAYS AMBIGUOUS about what is covered for each exam (Quote: "covers everything"). This is especially terrible when the homework and the lectures are NOT the same thing AT ALL!!! He WILL attempt to trick you with something never taught in class.

I don't think he's bad at teaching. When I mustered the will up to actually go to lecture, I think I learned things. AND the midterm and final both used questions he had specifically done in lecture, so you should just bite the bullet. But the class is just a terrible experience, he encourages questions and then is very condescending towards those who asked. The quizzes were SPECIFICALLY designed to not be something we directly learned, but to be a twist on the concept (this was said explicitly). Very few people got higher than like 70% on even one quiz. You had to realize some trick during a 20 minute quiz, and otherwise you would not be able to solve it. You literally have to print 30 pages of tables and figures yourself and bring them to the exams (it would make too much sense for him to provide them). If you forget an important table, good luck solving the questions :). The first quiz was funny because he just projected the question on the screen and said to write it on your own paper. There was no warning that this was the format ahead of time (because who the hell does it like that?) so half the class that uses paper had to give the half that uses ipads paper and pencils. The TAs got him to change this and print out our exams. The TAs tried their best to give us actually clear information, and fix the terrible structure of the class the professor tried to use, so just hope for good TAs. I would absolutely recommend a different professor, I don't think it can get much worse.

This class was quite boring and quite dense, but for a lot of students this is a mandatory class. As a mandatory class it could have been much worse. The material gradually gets more difficult and more confusing, but as long as you have a good understanding of the first 4 weeks of class, the textbook can help you easily pick up the later 6 weeks. The midterm and the final were very fair and were based on homeworks. The Professor was a bit sassy with students at times, or was not as good at answering questions as you might hope, but overall was able to get the material across.

Honestly this class was so boring and I barely paid attention. He gives you cheat sheets so just make sure to copy down whatever he does and take them in. He does not even check what cheat sheets you get to bring in, which renders the class pointless. Make sure you go to the test bank and use his old exams as they are very likely to show up. In addition to this, he made the quizzes open book, so there was really no need to study. Although it is important to be familiar with the topics, so much material is covered that it is almost impossible to know what he will put on his exams. More likely than not, he will put seemingly minute topics such as the finite difference heat equation. It is ridiculously easy to game plan this class without truly understanding the material.

Amar is the man. He goes over all of the topics in a very organized way, and is very clear about what we need to know. The textbook is crucial for this class, as you need tables of constants and correlations for the exams. I 100% recommend taking his class and getting to know him; he's a cool guy.

Before I took this class, I thoroughly read the reviews and thought this professor wouldn't be that bad. A lot of people refer to him as the professor to take for 105A and 105D. Honestly, I completely disagree. His lectures are extremely boring and the worst part is that they're extremely necessary. He very loosely bases his lectures off of the book, and he is pretty unpredictable. It was painful to go to each lecture and hear his condescending comments while he lectures so horribly. He is forgetful and unclear. He tries to be engaging but it just doesn't work out. He also made us print out like 20 tables from the book just IN CASE we used them in tests (we used less than a quarter of them). All in all, take him if you have the willpower to go to class all the time (and not fall asleep). But if you're like me, try your best to avoid him, he's not all that.

I took Amar for both 105A and 105D. He speaks very quietly so you need to sit close to the front of the class. It's also very hard to follow his lectures and take notes at the same time. He doesn't use the book and all the material is directly from his lectures. Make sure you pay attention and write down all of his examples! When he teaches something once, he expects you to remember that method and will ask for it on his quizzes/midterm.

If you learn well from lectures, take him.
