One of the best professors at UCLA! He cares for all his students and gives so many accommodations. He is so understanding and is always there for his students. The way he teaches is just amazing and very clear. I love him so much and **********000000% recommend everyone to take his class.
Took this class over the summer before my first quarter at ucla and it was an amazing course! I learned a lot about sociology of education and professor Andalon made the class engaging and clear with his slides which were very thorough. Highly recommend!
This class is an easy A there is pretty much no way you cannot get an A in this class. It is not possible to get an A+ in this class because the department has deemed it too easy a class to justify an A+ (according to the professor himself). It's 2 easy assignments, 1 easy midterm and 1 easy final. Attendance is encouraged but vaguely optional.
The professor is awful. Awful. The BruinLearn is disorganized, he just spends lectures rambling about things and showing YouTube video after YouTube video.
The worst thing is if you have to email him for an extension. His emails are unhelpful and rude, he does not reply to the actual question you asked.
He asked for my personal mobile number after I asked to submit an essay early because he wanted it submitted on a saturday but I would have no Wifi on that saturday (it was a group project all of us had to submit individually and my groupmates were not able to finish it until Saturday morning). I said I wasnt comfortable with that. Another student told me he did the same and yelled at her on the phone after she asked for an extension. I had to cancel my weekend trip as a result so I could submit the project on Saturday.
This is what he sent me after I asked to submit it a day early:
"I've been available quite a bit in class to clarify and provides extensive
I'm not understanding the request if you are in a group cannot give special additional time to some and not others students
We've provided a lot of support and flexibility
Please do as you plan and need to given your contexts and requests
We'll figure out
Thank you
Best wishes"
He then sent me 3 other emails in the space of 5 minutes, none of which answered my question or made much sense.
This class is VERY practical. All the skills learned in this class are directly applicable to entering grad school or the work force.
Andalon is a great professor and this class is a great resource to jumpstart students into their careers. We learned how to make a LinkedIn, create a Resume and Cover Letter, and at the end create a career portfolio using all of the assignments we had been doing throughout the quarter. Being able to finetune my professional documents has been a lifesaver while also getting major credit. The class fills up very quickly because it is useful and the professor does not try to ruin your GPA.
I recommend attending lectures because most of the time there is a guest speaker who is a UCLA Alum and they share how they got to the position they are in today, using their Sociology degree.
Easy A, but unprofessional Professor. So unclear with instructions, unnecessarily strict over the most simple things, and will lecture for hours about absolutely nothing. Most people didn’t show up to class because it was useless. Just read his slides online. If you need an extension or have any questions, good luck! He will chastise you and is extremely aggressive. Take this class for an easy A where you won’t learn anything and deal with nonsensical procedures.
This class was great. Andalon is a great instructor. He cares about the students and it was easy to get an A if you turned in the assignments. He divides the research paper up into 4 parts, and each part leads up to the final paper. He doesn't try to trick you - he just wants the students to learn and be passionate about the subject matter. I would definitely take a class from him again.
This class was extremely doable! Professor Andalon designed it in a way to slowly build our skills with comprehensive assignments and exams. His lectures are a bit dry but overall he is a great professor! The class has one individual assignment (250 words), two other group/individual assignments (250 words minimum), one group project where he lets you work on it in class and section, a midterm comprised of 10 multiple choice questions and an essay section (2 pages), and the final is the same format as the midterm. He also provides a study guide for the midterm and final which is basically the answers on the tests themselves. There is no way that one can do less than a B in this class. In all honesty, this is the easiest class I've taken at UCLA!
This class was interesting and not too challenging! Professor Andalon designed the course in a tangible way that built our skills with assignments. He is a great professor, however paying full attention during lecture can be challenging as it was 2 hours long. He provides a study guide for the midterm and final which comprise 10 multiple choice questions on the exams. Professor Andalon also allows two absences before lack of attendance impacts your grade.
TAKE CLASSES WITH PROFESSOR RICHARD ANDALON. HE IS LITERALLY THE BEST. Makes his classes super accessible for everyone. Worth it. I learn so much and the workload is reasonable.
