The entire grade for the class is based off of a single 5-page paper, due at EOD Monday after finals week. So long as he has it in his email before he wakes up on Tuesday, he says, you're good. And so long as you don't plagiarize the whole thing, you get an A. It can be about any topic you like, so long as you can relate it to inorganic chemistry. He is a fantastically engaging lecturer, with lots of props that he passes around. You can tell he's having a good time up there. If you are in 171, there is basically no reason to not take this too.
I really enjoyed this class. The focus is on "Materials World", so there are many engaging 50 minute lectures where Kaner talks about gemstones, AC vs DC, plastics, semiconductors, rubies, and even his own company being FDA approved. He's often really funny and shares so much of his knowledge, passion, and experience to the class; it felt perfect after the 50 min lecture from Chem 171. You only have to attend and write a 5 page essay due at Monday Midnight after Final's week. Highly recommend this class if you can fit this in your schedule.
