He's a pretty boring professor who simply reads off slides. As stated in some other reviews he gives a pretty generous curve. I personally felt his tests were poorly written, the second midterm and final left out 2 or 3 entire sections we learned. For this class I would say your TA is very important. I had Anthony Keates, he was rather good.

OK professor, but as most people said, BORING! I swear, you have to either be high on caffeine or have slept right before class in order to keep awake. Before I realized that, every time I went to class I had to fight off sleeping. Then I started taking naps right before class, which was fine, and then I finally realized that it's pointless to go to his lectures, because all he does is read off the slides. Guess what, you can do that yourself, even better.

The tests are not easy, I would say they're medium difficulty; however, he does put in a problem which is usually tricky, that's what separates the a's from the b's. so be on the watch out for those tricky questions.

TA sessions are vital, make sure you go to them.

yeah he's not a great teacher, but he gives the impression that he means well enough and wants people to learn. he gives a generous curve, 30% a's and 30% b's, and curves his tests pretty well. this class was very similar to econ 11 in my experience: get introduced to the topics in lecture and really learn how to do things in section. my ta, anthony keats, was very good.

sucks at teaching. even the book is better than him, and the book is the shittiest ive ever had at ucla. gave him a 2 overall because i reserve my 1 rating for lincoln chayes (aka dracula). i guess the slides were kinda useful but there was no point in him reading them out loud in class - we could do that wherever the hell we live.

Everyone, it is true. He sucks at teaching. All he ever does is read off the slides that you can just read yourself online. He does not do anything else. I repeat, NOT anything else. I went to lecture for the first week, realized this scenario. Then I stopped going. I went to the lectures ahead of the midterm exams, and he DID NOT TALK ABOUT ANYTHING RELATED TO THE MIDTERM EXAM, but merely moved on to material to be covered after the midterm. Rely on TAs. Even though I didnt, Im sure it wouldve made it easier if I went to more TA sessions. I had a really really good and knowledgable TA, her name is sophia, last name: ZHANG. Choose her if you can. Lots of people from other sections just ended up coming to our sections all the time because she was that good. However the real reason I got an A in this class is because I just did problems and practice exams. Textbook? Please save your money. If you must waste money, just the $60 to me. If you dont want to send me money, then just buy the previous version for $9 on half.com. I did not open one page of the textbook, and nor did anyone else. Do all the problems and practice exams and you'll be fine. Do them repeatedly. For stackelburg, price lead, etc. Do every problem TWICE. Brutally remember the the order of which it goes. The problems are all similar and ordered, you'll know what I mean once you take it. And theres only so much 101 covers, it should be easy to remember. Unlike 102 which I am taking now, the coverage in 101 has much less concepts to remember. Ace this class as its pretty pivotal for app to biz econ. good luck

Despite what these people say, the exams are NOT easy. You may find yourself doing the study questions over and over at least 5 times for the exam just to find one trick question in the exam that can bring your grade down to a B.

However, the professor uses some old exam problems for the midterms, and the format of the questions given in midterms are very similar to what you see in study questions.

There are two midterms that are out of 80 points, and one final that's worth 160, and your grade will be based on these three scores. The average for the midterm is usually high 50's or low 60's (which the professor curves as B-) and the average for the final was mid 90's.

You don't need to attend lectures (you will most likely fall asleep and get nothing out of your precious 1 hour) except for the ones right before each midterm/final just incase the professor tells you what kind of problems will be on the exam. However, you will need to rely on T.A.'s mostly to be able to solve those study questions. Textbook is useless.

What people say is true. You do not have to go to class, just make sure you can do all the practice problems that are posted online. I got an A and I only went to lecutre 3 times.
