Really pointless class.
The lecture is completely useless so you can not to go lecture at all.
I didn't learn anything from the class. The professor keeps on trying to appeal to students' emotion on how Mexicans went through struggle, but personally not being Mexican, couldn't really agree or anything. Throughout the quarter, most I have learned is how strong of a victim mentality the professor has.
Grading is whatever. Midterm is easy, and the final is a paper that depends 100% on TA, not the professor.

Overall, would recommend if you are Hispanic/Mexican but not really for other race

Professor Romero really knows his stuff and you can tell he's passionate about the Chicano movement. The class was so boring though. Tbh it's an easy A. Like, you literally don't have to do anything really. All of your grading is from your TA.

Lectures are 100% pointless. I went to all of them and you don't have to go to any really. He puts a lot of his slides online, and if you know someone that went to the lectures, they'll just give you the notes.

The readings are pretty pointless too. After like week 6 I didn't even bother to read them. The readings assigned are the same as his lectures, and you talk about the readings in your discussion section. So you basically review the readings two times anyway.

This class is an easy A. If anyone fails it I would think they were not going to discussion sections. That's where you pretty much learn everything.

Perfect beginning to my college career – the TA's and the professor love their work, are dedicated to the students, and the material truly opened up my mind to social issues in the Chican@ community and beyond. I'll never forget; I was walking into lecture 15 minutes late up the stairs of Broad, I look to my left, and lo and behold Professor Chao Romero is walking right there next to me modestly donned in sneakers. What does he say? "Thank you for taking the class." Go to him, feel free to talk about anything on your mind. The man has a JD from Cal, a PhD from here, and much more advocacy experience than I can ever hope to have.

Lecture slides are posted. Flexible GE requirement that can satisfy any Arts and Humanities GE (yup, even Performing/Visual Arts requirement). Grade basically solely based on midterm (announced prompt, had to do with a movie we watched), final paper (announced in advance), and a small paper about your family background/social identity. A+.

Shoutout to Rosanna "Rose" Simons for being an amazing, understanding, dope TA. Hope she's still there. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Chicano 10A

Professor Romero was a very knowledgeable professor. Honestly though the class was extremely boring in my opinion. Whatever it says in the syllabus about the calendar of topics to be discussed, forget about it. He just talks and talks and talks while reading off his slides. There are plenty of movies during class as well. There is no structure to this class.

The tests were too easy. The first test had some definition questions all from THE FIRST LECTURE. There was also a paper and a take-home final. He tries to make the final sound very analytical but nah. Overall really easy class. Half the room was empty halfway through the quarter and the students that did show up were asleep. I don't know who these enthusiastic students below me are, but they sure weren't in my class as far as I know. Take this class for easy A.

About the professor:
His lectures are very engaging and enriching. He helps breakdown down content of the class to be very understandable. He is open minded and only wants the best for his students. He is friendly, welcoming, and relatively easy to approach and talk to. He is very down to earth and passionate about his work.

About the TA:
My TA was Silvia and she was the best TA ever. She is wonderful and very supportive and helpful.

About the class:
The class is amazing. It looks at the Chicano history in a very holistic manner and debunks many common harmful stereotypes and falsities. The content of the class is extremely interesting.

About the work:
It is appropriately challenging. If you put in the effort you will get a good grade. The final was a take home which I personally found to be awesome. The books and reading are all very fascinating.

Overall: Wonderful professor and amazing class, TAKE THE CLASS.

ABOUT THE PROFESSOR:
He's very passionate about everything he says. He actually pauses and thinks twice before he says anything to make sure he gets the point across well. Very accessible and extremely friendly, especially if you need someone to talk to regarding any hardships you might be facing

HIS TESTS:
They're a breeze. Gives you the topics beforehand, or it's a take home essay. The TA grades it, so be sure to pay attention to what the TA wants to be discussed in the paper.

THE CLASS:
I'm a South Campus Major and this is by far the most rewarding class I've had at UCLA. You learn a lot about yourself as well as the people around you that are regularly facing hardships. It's honestly a feel good easy A class and DEFINITELY TAKE IT!

What everyone says is annoying.

This is an easy class, but you learn so much about chicanos, consciousness, your self, your history.

Take him, not for the easy A, but for a great experience

Okay, so I also took Chicano 10A with Romero and with Pepe (the TA, the previous reviewer also had). I found it incredibly easy and fun, although you do have to work to keep up with the readings and exert effort. I don't really write reviews here but the previous review lambasted Pepe in a manner in which I can't stand to just stay quiet. I was in Pepe's 1A section which was the honors discussion, as well as the honors seminar with both Romero and Pepe helping us for our honors research. I am Asian so whatever the guy's saying about how Pepe doesn't like non-Hispanics is phooey. Here's my experience.

I did all of the stuff on time: homework, extra credit, readings, and never once did I miss class, section, or an honors seminar. I went to Pepe to talk about my midterm, take-home final, and honors research paper to edit my work. He was friendly and helpful, especially in terms of editing. I got a 29/30 for my family history paper, a 59/60 on my final, and an A on my research paper. I didn't really do anything spectacular or great on those - I just followed what he said to the letter and got the job done. For the in-class midterm, I got a 57/60. The great thing about this is I remember how Pepe specifically told us to incorporate the readings even though it was an in-class midterm. In section, we even talked about all the readings we did so that we could remember them. As for Participation, I got a 22/20 since I did the extra credit stuff the prof. assigned. I got an A+ largely in part because of Pepe's help and grading.

Overall, if you do the work and if you come in to class thinking that an A is certainly attainable by exerting effort, you'll enjoy the class and get the grade you want. Its definitely an easy G.E. - an easy A even. BUT if you come into class expecting to miss section, do 70% of the homework, and basically think that you'll get a high grade without all the work, then you're screwed. I took this class for a GE, and I'll take it with Pepe again. Don't believe the guy below me.

Professor seems nice but he doesn't care about your grade at all and he doesn't reply to your email that well; TA grades your work. So you have to meet good TA.

Tip: don't take Jose Aguilar(Pepe)'s section. He grades more harsh, he gives out more homeworks, and he kind of discrimate you if you are not hispanic or white. If you don't trust me, read my case in below.

I joined the class late, so I was little behind. I went to him several times about my grade, and all he said was I'm doing "fine". But on week 8, I found out I've been missing my weekly postings; he never mentioned in class or in times when I came to him. I talked to him and he said he shares responsibility and gave me a week to make up a quarter's worth of homeworks. I had 3 finals in that week, but I submitted 7 out of 10 homeworks. After a quarter, I got 25% for participation, including homeworks. It didn't make sense because I attended all section except first 2 weeks(professor approved and excused me) and submitted 70% of homeworks. I emailed both professor and TA, but the TA said I turned in homework late, didn't participate in section, and was few minutes late in 2-3 sections. He said he gave me 25% doing me a favor. I told him he never told me that I missed homeworks, he rarely gave me chance to talk compared to other hispanic and white students, I was late only because of my previous class. There were guys who were late almost all sections and many other students didn't participate at all in section. I mentioned those guys and questioned his grading standard; he refused to provide explanation about it because according to him, it's against ucla policy. I emailed him and professor 4 times to discuss and arranged appointment; he ignored my words and repeated his saying. He didn't come to meet while I had to wait 20 minutes and leave. I told him that he's been ignoring my words and repeated his saying, and he got raged and emailed me to never contact him ever again.
