Awesome professor and class. Discussion Participation 20% Midterm 20% Paper 20% Final 40%. Definitely buy the online course notes that Prof. Brown posts as they are pretty much word for word of what he explains in lecture. You don't go over that many pieces of art so it is pretty simple to keep track of all of the 10 or so periods that you are accountable for. You are given about 8 study questions for the midterm and final that some form of these questions will be on the test, so no surprises on the exams. Definitely depends on your TA, so hope for a good one as I loved my TA and it made it a pretty easy A.

I had almost no interest in art history, and this ended up being my favorite class of the quarter. His tests are exceedingly fair and he doesnt make you memorize hundreds of slides. His lectures are really interesting and easy to follow. He is also really funny, which makes going to class a lot more enjoyable. I love Prof Brown and this class was great!!

I took this class Winter 2010. I'm an art history major, took it as a lower div, had some interest before the class. The statuary is cool, which is most of the first half. The beginning of the second half of the quarter was Mughal Painting (bascially painted manuscripts) which personally bored me beyond belief. But you also look at some Buddhist and Hindu monuments which are awesome. At first, I thought Brown was a retard. He speaks very casually and can't think of any other adjective besides beautiful. BUT he really knows his stuff and loves it. He grew on me eventually. He explains things pretty well. DO NOT BUY THE COURSE READER. It was the most expensive one I've ever had to buy, like 90 dollars?? and reading is completely unecessary except maybe 2 articles for section so maybe you cant borrow it from someone or buy it off someone for cheap? The other book is just a super cheap, small, paper back that you need to read. He has lecture notes that you can buy at the book store. You just pay $15 and pick them up after lecture. They are excellent. They have EVERYTHING you need to know for the tests, def get them. There was one paper the second half of the class. You also learn about eastern religions in this class (Buddhims, Hinduim, and Islam) which I love and its really interesting. I guess lecture can be a little boring, but its not a very difficult class and the grading isnt bad so if you need a ge or an art history lower div, I'd say take it. I got an A.

I really enjoyed taking this class. I have to say that at first I wasn't sure if I would like the class but the professor is very interesting (most of the time) and the class does not require a lot of work. Class notes are really important!!! Everything you need to know is there...I guess you don’t really need to go to class if you buy the notes, but going to class helps you remember the information, after all there is a lot of information. My only warning is that when taking the test you need to take your time to make sure that everything that you know is written down. When I walked out from the midterm and final all this information kept coming to me that I didn’t write down.

Moderately interesting class, and requires medium effort to get an A or A+. DON'T BUY THE COURSE READER!!! IT WAS A WASTE OF $90. Sure, he talks about some of the articles, but that's the thing he discusses all the main points in class so you don't have to read them. Plus, if you think you need to refer to a certain article you could find it on JSTOR for free. BUY THE LECTURE NOTES!!! Best $25 ever spent, especially since I had a crazy busy quarter and never went to class.

Easy and interesting GE. Don't bother with the course reader. Buy the lecture notes instead and study from those because they contain all the information you need for the midterm and final. The material was interesting but I still found myself falling asleep in his lectures.

This is the BEST and last GE class that I have ever taken at UCLA. Professor Brown is so interesting and when he lectures it is pretty easy to follow. All you have to do is go and pay attention to lectures. I would also suggest buying his lecture notes and reading the material because it all ties in with the material in lecture, discussion and midterm/final. His midterms are very reasonable since he doesn't try to trick you unlike a lot of professors. Also we didn't have to memorize a lot of slides and the midterm and final are essays. I feel like I actually learned and remember a lot of information that I probably won't forget. I HIGHLY recommend this class.

Professor Brown is probably THE best professor I had at UCLA so far. He has great lectures and often times these lecture would be the ones that I would be most looking forward to going to. He has a great way of conveying the information so that it is easy to understand and not too overwhelming. Yes, there is reading in this course but, if you buy the lecture notes and take good notes of your own, you'll find that the reading isn't too necessary. Overall I HIGHLY suggest this class-- it wasn't too hard- the midterm and final were essays.
You don't have to memorize too may slides like most art history classes.

Professor Brown's a great professor.
His lectures are always interesting and as a professor he cares about his students. I also think he brings a unique aspect to the classroom, as he is both a professor at UCLA and a curator at LACMA.
As for grades, BUY THE LECTURE NOTES.
I took the midterm with just the reader and got a B-, which was flabbergasting as I'd read the entire thing because I'd missed several classes. The day before the final I went to Ackerman and bought the lecture notes and got a solid A. BUY THE LECTURE NOTES.

I loved this class. It was my first art history class at UCLA and left a great impression on me. Very doable, only a midterm, a final, and one 5-6 page paper. The course reader is really thick and dense, a bit overwhelming, but I hardly read it and got an A on my midterm and paper (I have yet to receive my final grade). You experience is very dependent on the TA you get, I had Yingchen and she was great. Professor Brown is clear in his lectures and the course material is straightforward and interesting. I was not interested in India prior to this class but that has definitely changed. Buy the lecture notes, his exams come from them. I definitely recommend this class.
