It's an interesting class but you HAVE to go to ALL the lectures and kelley lowkey made the class harder this quarter (two midterms and its an essay now, not small weekly discussion posts) but its not a bad GE its not free though you def have to read and write quite a bit
One of the best GEs you could take at UCLA. There were no midterms and finals for this class. The grade was based off of weekly discussion posts centered around the assigned weekly readings and a final project that you work on with your entire discussion section. Because of this, I only spent an hour each week doing work for this class. Not only is the class super easy to do well in, Professor Kelley is one of the best lecturers I've had at UCLA. He is truly passionate about the subject and it is reflected heavily throughout the course. I also loved my TA and would attend her office hours to discuss the material but also discuss how the topics learned in class impacted the world today. As long as you keep up with the readings and do your part in contributing to the group project, you should have no problems doing well in the class :)
I took this class for my history GE, and it is an extremely easy class. I often forgot I was taking it, it was so light. We had 1 hw due a week in response to the reading, then no midterm or final, just a weird group project done by the whole section. I honestly could have stopped going to lecture pretty early in the quarter and been totally fine. It’s more important to do the reading than to go to lecture, because the readings are generally what is discussed in section, although you will be much better at participating in section if you go to lecture. Kelley talks fast and makes it feel urgent, like you need to be paying attention and writing stuff down, but you don’t really need to know any specifics or take notes because there are no tests. The group project was definitely weird but not a huge task, and doing my part took me like 45 min. Participation was required in section, and you will be called on if you don’t speak. The class was objectively interesting but started to feel pretty repetitive pretty quickly. Regardless, I learned something and got an easy A so I would recommend.
This is the best class I have ever taken. Professor Kelley is so easy to listen to. The content in this class is important and eye opening. I would absolutely take this course again. There is no midterm, and just a final project that you work on with your section. He presents your project for you during one of the last days of lecture.
TAKE THIS CLASS. SO EASY. Every week you submit discussion posts on the reading (it is a lot of reading but you only have to mention two of the readings in your post) and its a page double spaced. Even with lightly skimming the reading they took me about an hour and a half if I was really locked in. Everyone gets a 5/5 if you submit it. There are no midterms or final just a final project with your whole discussion section that is also really easy and really easily graded by Prof Kelley. You also do not need to go to lecture by any means because it has nothing to do with your grade, go if you are actually curious about neoliberalism because they are really interesting.
This is a great class to fulfill the historical analysis GE. The workload is quite manageable, with about 50-80 pages of reading a week and eight weekly 1-2 page reading responses. These make up 40% of the grade, with 20% being discussion participation and the other 40% being a group project that includes your whole section. The project can be tough to coordinate but is graded generously. Professor Kelley is a great lecturer and, because the lectures mostly serve to build off the reading and aren't necessary to prepare you for any final, many people don't attend them. I think it's worth it to attend these if you can, as they cover not only historical topics but also current events and have a lot of research put into them. Take this class if you want to learn a lot with little stress over your grade.
Coming from someone who has zero interest in politics and history, I still find this class insightful and helpful. Our grade is 40% final project, 40% discussion post, and 20% participation in discussion. The assigned readings might take some time, but you need to read or skim through them to write your discussion post. The final project was fun because my discussion session was cooperative and each of us did a small part of the project. Participation in lectures is not mandatory but is required in discussions. One thing I hope I have done is raise my hand more in the discussion session.
I loved this class! Would Recommend!
I found that Professor Kelley and my TA, Sunny Chen (who I loved, shout out to them!!) were incredible and always brought the subject matter back to people and how individual lives are effected by neoliberal policy. I wasn't overly interested in the subject matter of the class, as I took it as a GE, yet I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it!
This class is an easy A as there are no tests. The grade is based on participation in discussion, submission of a weekly one page discussion post on the reading, and a final group project.
The more you put into the class the more you will get out of it. I took this during a quarter when I had four classes and I think I would've gotten more from it if I only had three classes and had time to do all the readings rather than just skimming them. If you can't put much time into the class you can undoubtably still get an A as long as you submit your work.
My one gripe with this class was the final project which was an open ended group project with your entire discussion section. I found that this lacked a lot of direction and took quite a bit of time to coordinate as it was a large group. With this said, I still preferred the project over taking a final exam.
I loved taking this class. Professor Kelley is sharp, funny, and super caring for all of his students. The content is an important, insightful, and engaging look at modern history of neoliberalism, and never felt dull despite my not being a huge lover of history. There were two papers (graded fairly easily) and a group project that is really not that much work if all group members do their fair share. I would take this type of class for all of my GEs if i could.
I really enjoyed this class and learned so much about the injustices of capitalism and neoliberalism from professor Kelley! He gave really good lectures and while there was a lot of reading, it was overall a great class! I also had Henry Yang as my TA and he’s great.
While we had a ton of reading, we never had any tests or quizzes lol just a 6-7 page midterm essay, a 5-6 page group final essay (had to co-write it with like 4 people from my discussion), and a final website the entire discussion section worked on together. The material was super interesting too, and I feel like I learned a lot from this class! I took it as a part of my major, but this is a good ge class too if you want credit! Overall I really enjoyed my experience in it
