Winter 2026 - There were so many readings that were really important when it came down to the exams. There were two essays that we had to write that were very short, but were graded very specifically. He went based on slides the entire time, but he didn't post the slides. Attendance was mandatory.

Spring 2018 - Professor Hernandez Leon is a decent professor. The workload (reading load) is way too much. He typically assigns at least 4-5 readings a week all at which are at minimum 20 pages and is expected to be all read by class meetings. He provides slides in lecture (he does not post them on his website), he speaks pretty fast which did not allow me to write down all bullet points along with footnotes he would say. 20 question quizzes/ short essays alternate each week (all based off of the readings and lecture). He allows up to 5 extra credit opportunities. I would not take this class nor another class with this professor. If you do decide to take this class I have the books, email me at *************

Spring 2025 - This class was super interesting, his lectures were incredibly engaging. The workload wasn't too crazy, with roughly 2 readings per week, 2 reaction papers (900 words), and 5 points of extra credit that can be gained through attending lectures regarding Mexico (1 point each). The midterm was 22 questions with 2 of those questions being short answer, and the final was 32, also with 2 short answer. They weren't crazy difficult but you do need to spend a decent amount of time studying, the prof likes to trick you with small details like years (like saying an event happened in the 20th century when it happened in the 19th) and true/false questions that only have one minor detail incorrect. If you have Drew as a TA, he is also amazing, he did mini-lectures that outlined important concepts from lecture and he really makes the info we get in lecture a lot more clear. Overall this class was great and I would recomend.
