TAKE HER CLASSES. I took her class Fall 2019 and she is a new teacher but she really did amazing that quarter. The midterm was ROUGH and everyone did bad so she ended up curving it. The final was SO much better and she completely took her students advice. As long as you studied the study guides and came to class you will easily receive an A. The professor was kind and understanding. She is extremely sweet and easy to chat with. Also there are 5 memos and a map quiz but both are easy.
For the most part, this course was pretty interesting and undemanding. The map quiz during Week 1 was a little harsh - yes, you will have to remember the name, location, and capital of every Subsaharan African country by then. The midterm was rough and tested us on subjects that were glossed over in class. The majority of the class bombed it. The final wasn’t too bad, though.
Took fall 2019. Farole is a new professor, but I’m sure she will become popular quickly. Her lectures are engaging and the course material is interesting. The class is also very structured and straightforward. Map quiz is an easy 10% of your grade if you put in the work to memorize all the subsaharan African capitals. You also select any subsaharan country and do 5 country-expertise memos. I cannot emphasize this enough: GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE LECTURES. She even says she is going to take questions from the slides, which she posts online. It’s the most important thing for doing well on the tests. I got absolutely destroyed by the midterm and it was only salvaged by a generous curve (25% of grade). Final was somewhat easier, but you come more prepared after getting wrecked by the midterm. The final (40%) is definitely what brought my grade up to an A. She is a very helpful professor and encourages you to speak with her about topics you’re interested outside of class. Would take another class with her.
She is an AMAZING AMAZING professor!!! I would take every single class I could potentially take with her. She is so understanding of outside circumstances, SUPER easy to talk to and her class is so interesting. If you attend her lectures and study the slides the tests are super easy. TAKE HER!!!
This professor was so unhelpful. I went to her office hours and she made me feel like every question I asked was irrelevant or not important. The class was already pretty difficult because of coronavirus yet she could care less about what was happening with the rest of the world. I would skip taking her if you can! I enjoyed the class and the topics discussed but she always seemed uninterested in her students so if you can take a different professor, I would!
professor farole is one of the best professors ive taken so far. her lectures were well organized (used slides) and she knew had to unpack relevant material w/ supporting details. her lectured were engaging and it was easy for students to participate. it is easy to learn her material, as long as you study. exams were moderately hard. there were weekly reading quizzes but the readings are easy and very interesting. definitely learned a lot
I love professor Farole! course content was great, she encourages participation, readings were helpful but wouldn't say they're required, engaging and worthwhile lectures. we had a midterm, research project (essay or podcast), and take home final as the pandemic broke out. grading was very fair. learned so much and would definitely take her again.
