Ramsey is truly an awesome professor. He is very funny, clear in his lecturing, willing to clarify where needed, and overall fair. The tests were a bit tricky, but overall very doable. I highly recommend this class.

This professor does an INCREDIBLE job of teaching Math 61! He is so clear in lecture and his passion for the subject makes going to class truly an enjoyable experience for everyone. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. Do not hesitate to take a class taught by Ramsey.

Professor Ramsey is a great teacher. He explains all the concepts clearly and thoroughly. Generally, he's very helpful and friendly as well. There is weekly homework which doesn't take more than a couple hours and a weekly quiz which is 25 minutes and timed on Gradescope. The midterms were somewhat challenging with median grades in the mid to high 80's. I would definitely recommend taking this class with Ramsey because of the fact that he's such a good teacher, the workload isn't too bad, but you learn a lot of interesting topics.

Ramsey was nice. His lectures could be repetitive, but that was generally a good way to hammer in material. His tests were not too tough (at least compared to other professors). The homework could have some confusing problems, but pretty much everything in this class was generously graded (dropping lowest hw/quiz, multiple grading schemes depending on midterm scores, etc.)

Out of the handful of math classes I've taken at UCLA, Ramsey is one of the most engaging professors I've had. He was excellent at explaining concepts and topics. The homework was on the lighter side, with about 5 required problems each week, and more optional ones. Each week also had a short quiz. Overall, I managed to get through the required work in about 2 or so hours each week.

I felt like I understood most of the concepts, but this class' exams were pretty tough. If you are new to writing proofs, I would definitely recommend attending OH or discussion (which is optional). I found that I often times understood how to approach a problem, but had difficulties in articulating my thoughts on paper. The grading scheme is pretty lenient too, with two different schemes depending on if you wanted to count one midterm only, or both.

I don't think this class was too difficult, but you do need to spend some time in it to do well and get an A.

This review is for Math 31A that he taught in the fall quarter 2021-2022.
I am genuinely surprised to see so many positive reviews for this professor because experience was extremely unpleasant. I did not take AP calculus course during high school which probably affected my performance as well, however, overall he is not good at explaining or answering students'. The workload is very light which under prepares you for the unexpectedly difficult midterms and the final. Some students in the class have taken calculus before or taking this class as an easy A, so if you are a student like me whose first calculus course ever is Professor Ramsey's Math 31A, the curve will most likely not help you. I got a B which is not a horrible grade, but that is solely from the easy homeworks assigned weekly (worst 2 grades dropped and only 5 questions per week). I advise you to take a different professor if you are not familiar with calculus coming in.

I knew I wasn't good at math, but it took Math 61 for me to truly realize how bad it was. Discrete math can be really hard if you've never been exposed to math like this before. Despite this, Ramsey is a genuinely great professor who makes his lectures easy to follow along and interesting. The weekly homework and quizzes were manageable, but I found the two midterms and final very challenging. Most people taking this class are math/CS majors, so expect high averages for exams. In the end I had a C-. I have to be fair with myself and say I deserved that grade based on my overall understanding. Thankfully, I switched this class to P/NP, and even more thankfully Ramsey was lenient enough to curve it to a C (passing) in the end. Math 61 is definitely one of those "you either get it, or you don't" courses, and although I was often frustrated, I couldn't recommend Ramsey enough for trying to teach me as best he could.
