For an intro class, this class is extremely difficult and hard once you hit the second half of the quarter. This class has made me miserable and I am sincerely counting the days for this class to be over.
At the beginning of the quarter, this class was seemingly "easy" and once we hit week 6 this class turned into a never ending train-wreck. The homework and lectures themselves make me want to cry and quit lol. For the sake of your GPA, don't take this class with this professor.
The professor seems like a nice guy but that's about it. Only around 2 examples help with the 20 homework problems he assigns WEEKLY. He knows people are struggling and asking him questions and doesn't help.
In order to be successful, you basically have to go to tutoring sessions aside from lecture and discussion, which is ridiculous. Isn't that the whole point of the lecture AND discussion? But no, discussion, even though it is not mandatory, you basically are forced to go because they teach you another lecture. WTF??
Take this class with Levy, never had him but I've heard great things about him. For your sanity, time, stress, grade, and GPA avoid this class with this professor.

Nah chief, this class ain't it. Save yourself your time. GPA. and health by avoiding this class with this specific professor. Walsh teaches a completely different format of logic, so youtube videos nor google searches will help you out. The first half of this class was relatively easy but this second half is like a tornado just pulling you in and there's no way back. If you must take this class, take it with Levy.
Your success practically lives in you attending lecture, discussion, office hours, AND tutoring (also the tutors suck and are not helpful).
I would not recommend this class nor this professor.

I cannot stress enough how painful this class was. I'm a cog sci pre-major and this was a prerequisite but wow I wish I would've enrolled in another philosophy class because there are no words to express how awful this class was. Leading up to the midterm, things are SOMEWHAT *okay* but after? The entire class took a hard left turn and absolutely nothing made sense anymore.

Also, this class is so fucking obscure that no amount of youtube videos or google can help you. Also, discussion is used as a third lecture which is absolutely maddening and makes zero sense. Not to mention Carnap.io SUCKS and everything that was on the lecture notes was written in unnecessarily elevated language that made it difficult to parse.

Overall, Bruins, please spare your GPA. I could've had such a great GPA this quarter if it wasn't for the fact that I'm getting a C or C+ AT BEST in this class. If the class was heavily curved, it'd be SLIGHTLY less painful, but nope.

This class has got to be in the top 3 worst classes I have taken in UCLA. Not only does this professor teach in an extremely boring, monotonous manner, but is very inconsiderate of the needs of his students. From weeks 6-10, this class was terrible and extremely stressful and overwhelming. FYI Walsh teaches a completely different format of logic so please do yourself a favor and take it with Levy. This class with this professor is not worth your time- in order to be successful (meaning if you want to pass or get a B), you MUST go to lecture, discussion (stupid, but it's an extra hour of lecture), go to the useless tutoring sessions, and collaborate with people.

Very organized lectures with published lecture notes. Theoretically you can just read all the lecture notes prepared by Prof. Walsh without attending any lecture, as all of the lecture content is covered in his well-prepared lecture notes. Lectures are recorded so you can go over them if you don't understand a point or two. The historical backgrounds for the topics of logic taught are also mentioned which in my opinion makes the lecture more thought-provoking than my experience of PHILOS31 with Prof. Levy.

25% midterm, 50% weekly homework assignments (5% per week), 25% final. Content before the midterm was ridiculously easy. After the midterm, things got more difficult with logic proofs. Tests were extremely easy – if you managed to solve the homework assignments on your own. Although homework took up a bit of time, this class was still very easy and quite possibly the easiest class I've taken at UCLA.

Lectures not necessary to attend. Prof. Walsh answers emails very promptly, and is extremely easy to talk to.

Prof and TA extremely helpful if you ask either for help in office hours. Huge endorphin release when u get the problems right. Basically a bunch of puzzles to solve. Takes a little bit of effort but a good grade is feasible.

The quarter I took it the class was being taught by grad student Torsten Odland although I'm pretty sure we used Walsh's carnap.io. You got a lot of practice for the proofs/other exercises in the homeworks (which are pretty easy to get 100 on). There's a lot of readings that are not really covered by the homework and there were vocab terms that we were expected to know on the exams to test us on the readings (in addition to homework-style problems). The exams were supposed to be on paper but our quarter they were online on carnap.io because of the protests, if the exams were in person like they were supposed to be I'm sure they would've been harder.

The real MVP of this class was the TA Nefeli Ralli, who was super responsive on the slack and in general really helpful.

This class is definitely a jump from philosophy 31 but in my opinion still pretty doable.
