Honestly the easiest and most engaging GE I have ever taken!! Weekly assignments were pretty easy, just writing and responding to how you felt about the weekly material. Professor Redmond is so amazing and such a great professor. Her lectures are short, but very intriguing. We had one paper that did take some time but very manageable in my opinion. The final was a piece of cake, you could do it independently or with a group. My TA Erin was the coolest and I enjoyed going to our discussions (even at 9am on a Friday). I would 100% recommend this class!

Note: This review is for Fall 2020, a quarter conducted remotely for this class.

MUSCLG 69 with Professor Redmond was a wonderful experience. I feel as if I gained a greater appreciation for the manner in which music conveys its message--beyond lyrics and the "typical sounds" we acknowledge as meaning-laden. The only drawback was that there was only one "lecture" posted each week; I wish there had been two instead so we could dive into greater depth on some topics. My TA (Erin) made discussions fun and useful, helping to explain unclear terms/concepts from the week's readings and lectures (lectures were asynchronous).

The grade consisted of weekly listening journals and provocation responses. Erin let us write the listening journals about anything we wished; you could write about a song you had just heard the past week. Provocations were a little trickier, but Erin helped with facilitating our thought process and helping us attack the prompts. The midterm was definitely doable (2 1000 word essays and 10 fill-in-the-blank questions), while the final was to create a PSA about an issue of our choice, which I thoroughly enjoyed (especially since we could do it in a group).

TL;DR: The class is straightforward and easy with respect to grades, while the material discussed helped me gain greater appreciation for music and its use.

You GOTTA take this class. Not only is Dr. Redmond an amazing lecturer and professor, the work load is super, super manageable. The TAs are also super chill, I had Candace who was really awesome and funny. The only difficult part was one writing assignment toward the middle of the term but the final was a super easy group project. Would take this class a million times over.
