Winter 2023 - Dr. Shaked was the first lecturer of the course who was able to make the math/science component of the class make sense. She breaks things down in a clear and concise way, is consistently transparent in her instruction, and encourages engagement in meaningful ways. I've really liked her portion of the course.

Fall 2015 - You'll need the physics textbook package (3 books) plus mastering physics access code for the entire physics 6 series. All of this is is $180 dollars at the ucla book store (I'm serious, go see for yourself- it's $177.75 plus tax). I have the brand new entire set of 3 textbooks plus a new unopened mastering physics access code and I'll sell it to you for $80. Seriously, that's 100 dollars off! If for some reason you want the book with no access code (some teachers don't require them but almost every single physics professor does-especially shaked) I'm selling those for $50. I don't know how she teaches 6B, but for 6A, she was a great professor, genuinely concerned about her students. That being said, she will make you work for the A. It's not impossible, but if you end up with an A in her class, it means you really put in the effort and you deserve it. If you are struggling, you can schedule an appointment with her and she will offer individualized suggestions on improving your understanding and study methods/approaches. She did bombard us with homework and quizzes. There's "pre-quiz" before the material is actually taught, as well as a quiz on previous material and homework due on Fridays. Unless you have a really solid background in physics, the homework can become pretty challenging, not only because of the difficulty but the many problems she assigns. Yes, her midterms/tests are crazy hard, but she tries to model them after the homework problems you do. The first midterm was especially hard because she did not go over any of the "real life science" physics problems with the weird units. After everyone failed the first midterm, she adjusted her test and offered extra credit. There were many times where she offered extra credit (she doesn't curve though). She also welcomed student feedback after every lecture (another extra credit opportunity) and actually listened and adjusted her classes accordingly. I had no previous background before taking this class. I struggled the most during the first few weeks. It does get better afterwards. If you're looking for an easy A, she won't be the best professor for that. But if you don't mind the work, she's incredibly nice, a great person, and good at presenting the material.

I recently wrote a review on the date 4/29/2015. I've just gotten back my second midterm and I'm writing an updated review. I will try to be as objective as possible. Here goes.... I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER I HATE HER!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't sign up for this!!! I am enrolled in Niemann who is conceptual and for some crazy reason I am taking Shaked's midterms which are numbers oriented. Let's just say that I am enrolled in Shiemann (Niemann+Shaked). YES. I am enrolled in freakin Shiemann's course! I didn't sign up for this hell ride!! Wtf is this!!!!! Don't take Shaked (in other words, don't commit GPA suicide). She's crazy. Her obsession with estimating numbers has ruined 6B for some 400 ucla students. It's insane. I was off by a magnitude of 10 on one of the questions. Formula was right. Work was right. Units was right. Explanation was right. Estimation just a bitttt off. I got 2/9 points. The entire exam only has 40 points. Madness. Yes, she is a nice professor. Too bad her niceness won't save my GPA. The fact that there is going to be a curve doesn't make me any less pissed off at her. It's bs that I spend hours studying only to have her ridiculous exams thrown at my face. I got a freakin A from 6A with Huang who is considered difficult and I am getting a score from Shaked that hurts me whenever I say it!!! JUST TESTING THE WATERS HERE.. IS ANYONE ELSE FED UP WITH SHAKED AND FEEL LIKE EMAILING THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT REGARDING THIS. LET'S JUST SAY THAT I AM CONSIDERING IT.
