Professor Shafir is honestly the best! The material was very manageable and the tests were not bad either, I believe the average for the midterm was an A-. We had one midterm and a final which is not cumulative. It was open notes and proctored through zoom. You also do not need to attend lectures, but she had live sessions once a week and we would just talk about COVID or topics relating to the lecture for the week which she posts on CCLE. She is very helpful and one of the reasons why I am excited to minor in public health.
This class was completely online and asynchronous this quarter so take this with a grain of salt if you're in person. Professor Shafir is a very nice person and a solid lecturer. The course had very little work: two posts per module, watch/read the required material, and a 2-3 page public health editorial. The midterm and final were open note and multiple choice, but were still a bit tricky. You definitely need to review the material before tests because she gave 1 hour for 50 questions. She offers some extra credit, so I'd do it just to be safe. If you try your best in this class it should be an easy A.
This class is a very easy A. Grading scheme is: participation 15%, midterm 30%, op ed assignment 15%, final (not cumulative) 40%. She offers a few easy extra credit points throughout the quarter, as well as an op-ed revision option. Participation consists of 2 discussion posts for each half of the course on a public health topic, and you can get extra credit by posting 1 additional post for each 1/2 of the course. Exams are open note/internet and can be either taken in the lecture hall or proctored with camera on over zoom. There is also no discussion section for this class, even though there is a discussion listed in MyUCLA. Dr. Shafir is very nice, funny, and a great lecturer, but she does fly through slides pretty quickly. She also gave out a couple PTEs for the class. I would recommend at least skimming through the readings, because some (maybe 2-3 per test) exam questions asked specific things from the readings (kind of just like what the main point was from a certain reading; nothing too detailed) that were not mentioned in lecture. Exams were about 45 multiple choice/true or false/matching questions and you had about an hour to take each exam. Conceptually, this class is easy, the workload is low, and exams are extremely fair. I would highly recommend this class if you need an easy A and/or are intersted in public health.
Really informative and interesting class, just pay attention to deadlines because the asynchronous nature can make it easy to forget about them. Agree with everything said in other review!
