Venkatesh is probably the fastest talker I've ever encountered. This was nice because the first part of the course was very basic, and also lectures often ended early. But it proved annoying towards the end when the content was new, and also when he'd get annoyed answering questions.
The midterms were very nice. They were just like the review sheets he posted, and the questions were easier than the homework problems by far.
The homework sets were at first reasonable, but then they became ridiculously long. It would take me hours and hours to complete the last few homework assignments. And most of the questions were either repetitive or so abstract that you knew they wouldn't show up on any exams.
The final however was not fun. I studied really hard for it and I was kinda irritated to find that the questions from the material covered on midterms I and II were not recognizable to me; I definitely panicked.
My TA, Jake Bahr, was insanely smart but just not good at getting us ready for the exams.
Overall a rather standard professor. Lectures are fast-paced but I don't blame him given the amount of material covered. The midterms were not bad but the final was extremely difficult, though it was curved to an 80%.
Siddarth teaches like a mathematician. What I mean by that is that he focuses on proofs and larger overall mathematical concepts, avoiding complex numerical calculations and just using equations which is at times the opposite of what you will need as an engineer or physics type major. I am not a mathematics major and so this was super frustrating as our final was bruuuutal and focused heavily on theoretical problems with less than half of the test being actual computation ...not reflective of the course material at all. He seemed like a nice guy for the most part, but just didn't know how to teach this class at all.
Prof. Venkatesh was a very good lecturer, he talks kind of fast but he was always willing to repeat what he said or explain a bit more if someone asked. He also held a lot of office hours and was very helpful even though he seemed to be quite busy. He let me join the class after the first midterm which was very nice of him, even though joining late might have been a bad idea because the final will end up being 55% of my grade. I'm sure that a lot of the other reviews complained about the final so I'll try not to, let's just say that I might end up retaking this class. All things considered, I thought he was a very good professor (if we forget about the final and maybe the second midterm) and I'm sad that he's leaving us for Berkeley next quarter :(
Sidd is a really decent professor who gives engaging and decent lectures. My main complaint would be his exams are hard & too much homework. However, he curved it so the median is B+. Thank you so much and have a great time at UCB!
