I had him for LS2. First off, Dr. Schein is a pretty nice guy. He is enthusiastic, a little dorky and really into his material which kinda kept me awake through most lectures. He definitely likes to learn the names of the people in the front, mostly girls, which is pretty cool. HOWEVER, his class is not easy. He races through lectures and I feel like he said we were behind already from week 2 to week 10 (and never lectured about 10 slides in the last chapter). His test are difficult. LOTS OF STRAIGHT MEMORIZING. Not too much conceptual and a lot of tricky questions. But my biggest problem was the curve. I calculated my points in at the end (he tried to "normalize" the scores -wtf??- by giving us a 0/8.1 for everyone) and i dont know how he does his grading. The percentage I got in the class was my final grade, however I talked to some people and there final letter grade was curved up from their raw percentage so i dont know what the fuck happened to mine but that was jacked up... Sure it was hard and I got ripped off in grading, but hes still not a bad lecturer. Really smart and available if you need him but GOOD LUCK on his tests!!

I took LS2 with PROFESSOR Schein. I was a little off put at first, because he was very unapproachable outside of class. I called him Mr. Schein by mistake the first day.. DO NOT DO THAT, he made it clear that was not his name and was not very nice about it. I have heard similar experiences about him being unapproachable by several other students as well. However, if addressed in a group he seems to be nicer, and he is a good professor. I did not see any sexism, as people suggest, nor did I think the class was overly difficult. He expects you to know the information, but his lectures are his main focus. I didnt read the book, and did considerably above average simply by thoroughly listening to his lectures. Do not be fooled when he says at the beginning of the course that he only asks conceptual questions though. He asks a TON of memory questions. I.E. how many years did civilization occur or how big is the average cell size he said in class. I also took LS89, the honors part, and he was WAY more approachable there. He is extremely knowledgeable in a lot of subjects so his random rants are actually pretty interesting. Overall: He is a good lecturer He is slightly unapproachable outside of class Not overly difficult He is pretty funny && Brian was an AWESOME TA, who knew a lot and was extremely helpful (I recommend going to the TA's office hour instead of Schein's because he is scary) DO take the class, and DO show up to the class, because the lectures will get you an A.

I took LS2 with Schein this fall2010 quarter. After reading the bruinwalk reviews below, you might say to yourself, "oh, what an easy teacher ill take it with schien" To do such a thing would be one of the biggest MISTAKES of your life. Schein has gotten much harder, no one got a 100 on the first midterm (so obviously the class has changed since the liars wrote the reviews from below So, about the class: The tests are FUCKING HARD. Seriously. You might think that all multiple choice is good. IT'S NOT. A lot of the questions are tricky, tricky and he pulls them out of his ass. His lectures are horrible, they only provide a general idea of concepts. I would only pay attention to the last half of his lectures. For the first 2 midterms, you can get away memorizing just the notes. For the final, you must read the book or you will FAIL. He is seriously such an asshole and dick during office hours, except to girls. He also has us read this DUMABSS, LONG LIFE ASCENDING BOOK that talks really in depth about the evolution of the dick,eye,plants,animals,hearing,mind,etc.etc.etc. And you MUST READ IT, because he has questions from it on the final. He also made us watch an inconvient truth. This ass is always trying to spit out his liberal shit. Non-cumulative midterms are the ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS CLASS. However, if I had to do it again, I would take cumulative midterms/final just to get away WITH HIS HARD BULLSHIT EXAMS. Oh, and also the final doesn't have 3 chapters, it has like 5-6 chapters too. All in all, DON'T TAKE THIS WITH OCHEM AND TAKE THIS WITH ESIDN. WAIT A QUARTER IF YOU MUST. YOU WON'T REPENT IT. and the cocky fags who wrote those reivews below are probably ur typical south campus douches, acting like they never study and shit but in reality you know they are the most cutthroat studious ppl on campus. GOOD LUCK.

LS 2 Fuck this class and Michelle Kim (she is horrible). His grading scheme makes no damn sense. He did not do the normalization correctly. His exams are fucken stupid and full of irrelevant details when he claims his class is conceptual. I should have taken the class with Fain/Cooper or waited for phelan or esdin. He is the worst LS2 proffessor, His slides are just straight out the book

I also had LS 2 with Schein. I have to say that people who complained about this class in any way do not belong at UCLA. They should just drop out instead of contributing to the gross overcrowding here. I can honestly say that LS 2 with Schein is the easiest class I have taken at UCLA. And I have taken some of the easiest courses at UCLA, like Music 15 with Rutenberg, History 3C with Ruiz, and Math 3c with Preda. In comparison, LS 2 with Schein required absolutely no effort. The labs were a joke. And both of the midterms and the final were MULTIPLE CHOICE! You'd have to have a mental retardation to complain about that. Getting 100% on all of the tests was very doable. I got a 94%, 100%, and 97% on the three tests. Overall, I got an A+. And I did this taking 23 units that quarter (Fall 08). As a fifth class, it's the easiest one that I could have taken. By the way, I think it also contributes something to say that I got these results even though I am not one of those crazy premeds.
