Proffesor Engel is very knowledable about cognitive psych. The class is hard if you do not go to lecture or study. However, he talks real low and this makes it hard to understand him. His tests are tricky as most of the questions are scenarios and you have to critically think and apply the right concepts. 80% of the questions come from the lectures notes and demos in class, about 20% come from the book. The book is difficult.

Sweet man. Lectures are kind of slow sometimes, since he goes over the concepts over and over 'til people get it right, which is good in a way, but then you're stuck in a lull sometimes. Interesting class though. =) Text is very easy to read. Tests are multiple choice and straigh off of lectures and text. No tricky questions whatsoever. TAs are incredibly helpful and very organized. Make sure you read the discussion board from time to time, it really helps with the studying. =)

Had Prof. Engel for the last half of psych 120A. made the 5 weeks pass by fast. Lectures were organized, demos included, which were fun to do. pretty funny professor, would repeat everything if necessary to help you understand. for his half of the course, stick to the book and lectures he had an almost exact mixture of both. if you're going to take 120A take it with him!

This Professor was one of the best Professors that I have had in my entire college career. He made a class that I was very tenative about fun and interesting. I actually looked forward to this class. He was constantly involving the class in fascinating demonstrations that made the course material more interesting as well as easier to understand. I also thought his jokes were funny. He was very personable and was always welcoming students into his office hours. His tests were fair and he offered extra credit that integrated the course material in a fun manner.

This review is not motivated by sour grapes--I did very well in the class, but I must disagree with students who have praised this prof. This prof is really overrated, perhaps because he is young (not old and crusty like a lot of the psych profs) and he wastes a lot of class time trying to entertain students instead of spending time explaining concepts clearly and in detail. He is very condescending and dismissive of students, and unwilling to answer questions that he deems unworthy. He's even worse in office hours, very snide and passive-aggressive. His overheads include insufficent detail as well. Nonetheless, the exams are fair and relatively easy. It's just tiresome to have to endure another snobby, rude psyh prof.

Engel is a really good teacher, and his lectures are pretty entertaining. You will learn alot in this class, and the MT's are pretty easy. Overall this is an easy class to get an A in, but you will have to attend all the lectures if you want to get an A.
