I am not an EE major and I can tell you right now that Dr. Jacobsen is by far the best professor I have taken at UCLA. Professor Jacobsen has a very unique style of teaching and is extremely intelligent. If you plan to take him, make sure you go to his office hours. Not only will he answer your questions, but he has really good stories to tell you about himself. It's great learning from him outside of the classroom. You can talk about anything with him. Dr. Jacobsen truly defines what you would hope to get from professors; a well rounded education.
I know most of you are wondering what grade I received in his course. I did fair given the amount of time I allocated to this course. Dr. Jacobsen knows who works hard in his class, and if you put in the effort you will walk out of his classroom extremely satisfied. The knowledge I gained from his course will probably fade off in a couple years, but what I will remember forever is the great conversations I had with the professor. I am really gonna miss the old man.

These reviews are damn funny..Nothing is closed to what I experienced. I took him for EE103 in Spring 2009. He is by far one of the worst teachers I've had. He is damn boring and the worst part is that during lectures he gives some dry sh** jokes that I'm not gonna laugh at even if I smoked 3 dubs before coming to the lectures. I stopped coming to his lectures after the first week because I found out they were useless. but he's lecture notes is w.o.n.d.e.r.f.u.l. So, I basically never come to class except for the midterm and final. I came to the discussion session twice (the ones be4 the midterm and final). I never come to any office hours. Fail all my HW's and got an A JUST BY STUDYING FROM THE LECTURE NOTES. one more thing, the HW's will NOT help you on either the midterm or final because the HWs will just be like matlab stuff and you're not gonna deal w/ any of them on tests. I did 50 on average on my HW's while the rest of the class get 90's and I got the highest score on midterm. Don't bother doing the hw's. Jacobson never fails to make you sleep in his lecture.

I don't understand those ratings at all...He really is not that bad. Just try really hard in the homework, GO TO OFFICE HOURS so that the TA and Jacobsen make you understand his lectures. Also, most of the answers from the homework can be found in the slides and video lectures but most people don't bother looking at those. By the way, it is the homework that helped me get an A. Most people didnt try and the average would be around a 50. Since his homework is 25%, it helped me a lot. If you try hard in this class, you will do very well. The only negative point is that it takes quite some time. Lectures could get quite boring too

Had him for EE103 spring quarter 2009. I would say overall his class was pretty informative. I have to say though that each homework was a project in itself. You have to start them many days before it's due. His lectures were also very hard to follow a lot of the time and I ended up rewatching many of them online 2-3x. Although his homeworks are mostly matlab based, his midterms and finals are mostly linear algebra proofs. That is why I'd recomend taking this class right after Linear Algebra.

I was 80/110 ranking and got a straight C. So he definitely is failing a percentage of the class.

Jacobsen as a person is very entertaining and straight forward. He doesn't mess around. If he was single I'd set him up with my grandma in a heartbeat.

Let see... well... What you hear about EE103 is true, it is one of the harder EE classes out there, and it's not easy to get an A. There are numerous matlab assignments and homework problems which do help in understanding the material, and his textbook is pretty easy to follow. He posts video lectures which help a lot because his class can get really boring. I thought i was going to fail the class after the midterm and my project scores, but I rebounded pretty well on the final and ended up with a B. !!! I know!!! he did say he takes into account improvement, so maybe thats why I got a B, because reading his reviews, he's not afraid to fail people. He also used to be the dean of the engineering school. Yeah.
