I heard great things from others about Steve and this class, so I was immediately interested in taking it. The class is typically only offered to econ students (I'm biology), but Steve was super helpful and immediately gave me an enrollment number. The class consists of 4 mandatory lectures and 2 assignments (creating a LinkedIn profile and writing an elevator speech) both super beneficial to the student. The lectures cover topics about careers, investments, how to network, as well as providing tons of helpful resources. Steve includes personal anecdotes about how he's been able to find success in his career which is super inspiring. He clearly cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to find their own success--he even schedules 1-on-1 calls with his students to discuss their own career paths and provide some advice. I HIGHLY recommend taking this course, Steve is great!
I can't recommend Professor Ross' class enough! He gave very insightful lectures throughout the quarter that honestly taught me so much more about finance, career dos/don'ts, professional development, etc. than most of my economics classes. He is extremely supportive and he has one-on-one meetings with students to offer individual guidance. I was lucky enough to meet with Professor Ross to discuss my career aspirations and he pointed me in the right direction and overall made me feel incredibly proud of my own accomplishments. He is an expert in his professional life and truly one of the best professors I've had at UCLA! I would absolutely recommend this class, it is extremely manageable and it helps set you up for a successful career and life!
Steve is a wonderful and very kind professor. He teaches very practical skills about interviewing, using LinkedIn, networking, and coffee chatting with industry professionals. He also talks about the different career paths available in finance, consulting, real estate, and technology, and is super eager to help out his students. I used his interview tips many times this quarter and got several internship offers using them!
The class is very light on time commitment. It's only a 2-hour seminar 4 times during the quarter, usually every other week starting Week 3. There is one assignment (very quick) that you email to him to get class credit, though I didn't do it and still passed (probably because I always talked to him after class)!
I highly recommend this class to every student, not just to Econ students! It was highly worth it and one of the most practical classes I've had here so far.
Take this class. I'd recommend you to take it as soon as you can when you qualify for upper divs—Ross prepares you for all of the roles outside of graduation.
He takes time out to talk to anyone that reaches out and will give you genuine advice aggregated from all of his time working in the finance industry. There are only a few assignments that you should do well, it will help you once you start recruiting and interviewing.
Ross is by far one of the most engaging lecturers and you can see that he cares about this class (the dude drives from SD to Westwood every 2 weeks for this class AND as an MD at BoFA).
