Professor Dickey is a great and engaging lecturer. Not a boring moment in class, he somehow makes 2 hours fly by. I wasn't an English major but I told him I wanted to see what the hype was with Shakespeare since I had read a couple plays before and wanted to see what the big deal was. He let me add the class and now I can say I understand what the hype was about. We read 7 plays, all of which were great. Would definitely take another class with Professor Dickey on Shakespeare if I can!
Professor Dickey is incredible. Engaging lecturer, kind, expands so much beyond the material, truly made Shakespeare fun. The quizzes were a bit hard but he graded them extremely leniently. The final paper and exam were fair. Dickey is very approachable, never makes you feel unwelcome or dumb in your ideas, and does not force participation. He is super helpful in OH and always willing to give feedback on your quizzes or paper should you seek it.
I was intimidated at the beginning of this class because I had limited knowledge of Shakespeare and had only previously read a couple of plays back in high school. By the end of the quarter, I felt like an expert and was much more comfortable sharing and explicating. Lectures were also often funny, Dickey has a great and subtle sense of humor and did not always run the full two hours. I would 100% take this class again, or any other class with Dickey for that matter. I highly recommend!
I would definitely recommend taking Professor Dickey's Shakespeare class. Even if you didn't previously enjoy Shakespeare or struggled with it, chances are high you'll like this class. He's funny, down to earth, and makes it interesting. He's also very knowledgeable and treats his students kindly. I would say his workload is fair. There are in-class quizzes that can seem obscure or difficult, but I think they're not worth too much (are more to encourage engagement). He learns people's names quickly, so I would not recommend missing a lot of classes.
I love his classes, he is a great lecturer. The work load was medium, but his quizzes were quite hard. I read all the readings but sometimes I still could not answer his quiz questions. Overall he's a great professor. Take his class!
