OMG, are these people on crack? DO NOT take this class!! He is the worst professor ever! His lectures are incredibly boring and was snide and condescending to students in every class. Occasionally he made a funny joke, but it did not make up for the snooty behavior! You will not get an A. I worked my butt off in that class, went to every tedious lecture, contributed, did all the readings and only pulled a B. There were lots of C's. It was like you needed to be a native french speaker to get a good grade. Maybe he just had a bad quarter, but who cares? Don't risk it! He was awful, awful.

Werner is a nice man. But he is a bit neurotic. It's as if he's only there to entertain himself, rambling in French, laughing at jokes that he only seems to be in on, knocking on the desk, and asking himself why he's in such a good mood. There is practically zero class discussion; the students seem to be more useful as an audience to his antics rather than participants.

I found the class to be frustrating because he is very traditional in his analysis of literature and what he wants from your papers and test responses. So, if you're willing to go through the motions, recite details, and write a couple papers in French, the class is more or less painless. There was a midterm and final, both consisting of 6 or so short answer questions and a bonus, and then one 2 page paper and a 6 page paper, one due on the midterm and the other the day of the final. He's not tricky; he goes straight from lecture material. And you'll hear key points more than once. It's not hard to do well --- I sat by the window, stared outside all day, read almost everything once, and got a B. Overall, though, I was pretty bored.

He knows a lot of details about the literature, he constantly recites things from memory, but I didn't feel at all enlightened --- maybe that's just a consequence of being a senior literature major.

I wouldn't recommend rearranging your whole schedule to avoid him, but he wouldn't be my first choice if there were other options.

Prof. Werner is the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are boring and he seems unconcerned about his students. It was nearly impossible to understand him for he didn't speak clearly, and he spoke fast entering tangents that no one really caught on. I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone.
