Take 14C with this professor. Insanely easy class. Only bought the lecture supplement, only went to the first lecture, and not a single discussion. Just do all of his practice midterms and finals, and you will get an A+. The midterms and final he gave were basically the same thing as the practice ones. I dont know how people cannot get an A in this class.
When he lectures the concepts are easy and straightforward for the most part. Then you go to your thinkbook and are like what? The problems are time consuming and I recommend doing them all except for the first chapter really. You have to stay on top of your work in this class, because you fall behind real easily.
also. I see him as being the type of guy who likes steak....
Instruction: Wonderful. Hardinger is an exceedingly competent professor with an (generally - see note below) enjoyable teaching style
Jokes: I know it seems ridiculous that this deserves its own separate subsection, but the frequency with which Hardinger tells these COMPLETELY INSIPID jokes is appalling. It eats up at least 5 minutes per lecture, which is a lot when each lecture is only 50 minutes. The jokes are horribly stupid and often repeated. Worst of all, Hardinger refuses to move on (instead saying "No? No? No?") until some poor soul halfheartedly laughs.
Personality: In my (admittedly limited) interactions with Hardinger, I didn't find him to be a particularly warm or welcoming professor. But I have little to base this impression on.
Overall: I found this class to be totally manageable in large part because of the insane amount of resources provided by Hardinger plus his highly accessible lectures (Above all, attend lectures. Please. Saying you'll "get to them later" doesn't work and just leads to frantic scrambling right before the midterm/final). I know it's organic chemistry, but don't freak yourself out - this is more than doable. Also, a quick note about all of those resources: don't kill yourself trying to do every single problem. My personal study plan was to do all of the practice problems and EVERY SINGLE midterm/final (there was one question on the other lecture's final which was directly lifted from one of the past finals). Before each exam, I would skim the CFQs. It worked for me, but find what works for you and don't stress about the mountain of problems. Instead, appreciate the mountain of resources. Good luck!
Hardinger is a good teacher. He provides you with all of the resources that you need to succeed in his class (do as many of the thinkbook problems as you can and DEFINITELY do every single past midterm and final. The more tests you can get your hands on, the better. The more problems you do the better shape you'll be in for the tests). Work hard and long. You don't have to study every day like he says, but prepared to work hard. Get things down in advance and struggle beforehand so that you don't struggle on the tests. Go to the lectures, he's actually funny, despite most peoples' dislike of his dry humor. Go to multiple TA sections/find the TAs who are the best. While they may not seem worth the time, simply going to a discussion section and watching the TA work out problems for you can double as studying without much effort. So go! Do all of these things and you'll probably end up with an A.
Hardinger is a good teacher. He cares and tries to be nice. You can get an A easily if you 1) go to class 2) do all problems and don't stay too behind 3) do all practice finals on his website 4) go to HIS office hours 5) go to multiple discussions and find TA's that YOU life and learn more from.
Honestly it is not that bad at all. More fun and interesting than general. No math. just get it and you are good for the whole quarter.
just don't get lazy. you are in school. Your only job is to get an A so get it
To do well in the class, you just have to study, study and study, but you don't have to study everyday. Skip TA's discussion if they're horrible or else you'd be wasting time. If you're not a morning person, skip all the 8am lectures. Save the lectures podcast and listen to them after he lectured after each topic. This way, it makes more sense. Form a study group the day or two before the exam with at least one very smart pre-med, who is willing to help his/her friends. Do the extra credit. Attend hardinger's office hour. Do regrade your test because Hardinger might have multiple correct answers. Just confirmed with him before submitting.
Seriously, I wish I had gone to lectures this quarter and done the Thinkbook questions. Hardinger is SUCH a good professor... something I didn't realize until I crammed all the video lectures in like two days (NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO). He gives you past exams and is really a great lecturer. His jokes are kind of lame, but I love that quirky kind of humor. There are no surprises on the exams and everything is really straight forward. If you just go to lecture and do practice tests/ problems, you'll be golden. POST ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD. Free 10 points... just do it. You don't need the suggested textbook because we NEVER use them. Thinkbook... really useful if you learn by doing a lot of problems. If you can just learn from lectures and practice exams, save yourself the forty something dollars. I'm definitely taking him for 14D, and definitely going to lectures this time around.
What a great professor. I did all the work--OWLS, CFQ's, PP's and got a B in 14C, but that was my first time doing OChem. Dr. H is so amazing. He helps in office hours and is pretty entertaining. His jokes are funny--I don't know why people don't laugh. Doing the past midterms really does help, but you must act like you're taking the actual midter. Also, when you take them think about ways in which he can ask the questions in a different way. Dr. H is seriously the best science professor I have had and I didn't even get an A. I still have his Thinkbook and Lectures, and use it as a reference for my classes now. Take him if you can. You have to work hard and really put effort into it. Participate on the discussion board too--extra points. Take Ian for your TA if he still teaches. He is awesome, and has been Dr. H's TA for a while. He is helpful and will really explain stuff. You're awesome Dr. H!!! Wish there were more professors like you!!
The best science professor at UCLA by a mile. Dr.H's class is difficult, it's ochem. However, he gives you truck load of tools to help you succeed. His lecture supplement and his Thinkbook are very well organized and clear. There are so many practice problems for you to do so you can be efficient in your learning. There are no surprises when it comes to exam time. Do lots of problems and you'll be familiar with his style of questioning. His website alone contains a lot of the resources that makes learning much easier. No curve so be prepared to study hard.
