153c with professor clarke has been by far my favorite class that I have taken at UCLA so far. Even though I took this through zoom I could feel his energy and passion for the subject material which made me enjoy learning even more. The class is definitely tough with the test averages being around 50-60% but he curves very generously as the A was often around 70%. The class has weekly quizzes that are about the level of the midterms. They are a really great to make sure you are keeping up with the material and the TA's and the slides they make are super helpful. I mostly studied by taking detailed notes of his lectures and that worked well. You may need to rewatch the bruincasts a few times but with 2x speed its not too bad. This class will probably be the one you put the most time into whichever quarter you take it but its 100% worth it. Its one of the few classes where I felt motivated to learn the material for the sake of learning rather thank the tests like with some of the other classes life science majors have to take

I had Dr. Clarke in Spring 2014. I still remember how amazing of a professor he is. He always had a story to tell and made lectures enjoyable. Most importantly, the material he taught stuck with me. I remember on the last day, he basically summarized the entire quarter in 10 minutes and I followed every single step. It was awesome!

I went into the final with an A but my final grade was a B+. You might not get the grade you want, but you definitely learn a lot. I highly, highly recommend this professor.

I hated 153 A due to the lack of ability to teach. Considered switching interests (majors) until this class. Clarke is an adorable, very smart, and very nice professor that truly cares about his students. He tries to give you pnuemonic devices and little side stories to help you out. The thing to be warned is the TAs and the weekly quizes. They ended up being harder than the midterms (at least for me) Other than that, please familiarize yourself with electron pushing and structures!

Dr. Clarke has to the most approachable influential professor at UCLA. He is understanding and helps you out with any question you may have. His class is difficult and you have to keep up with the lecture and material but, it’s not as difficult when you have him there to help you. Go to office hours they help he will stay for however long you need him to stay, he will go over in detail the mechanisms you may need. Overall, he cares about his students and wants us to understand the material he is teaching. I will never forget Pyridoxal-phosphate. :)

Professor Clarke was extremely nice and caring
I attended only one question session review for the final and I regretted not attending the previous office hours
I really enjoyed his class because he related the topics to our lives
The class was very time consuming and difficult though
However, weekly quizzes really made me keep up with my work
Overall, he was a great professor!! <3

Dr. Clarke is actually better than what these evaluations say.
My research trainer actually said that I was lucky to have him for a professor.
I never write evaluations, but I had to for Dr. Clarke, because he is my favorite and best professor at UCLA, and I am a senior.

His class is challenging, but hey, it's 153C and you don't have much other options.
Go to all the lectures, study before the quizes everyweek, because they are really big part of your grade and it's easy to get good score than midterms and the final. He is estremely passionate about teaching and you can tell, because you will really be paying attention during the lectures.

Overall..take him for 153C and you won't regret.

Dr. Clarke is one of the more challenging professors in the chemistry department. But he is also very concerned with
students understanding and enjoying the material.
He is readily available outside of class to
answer any questions. His office hours help
you get a grip on the basics and also consider
applications that challenge your understanding.
He is marvelously prepared and knowledgeable, but
he expects you to put just as much effort into
your studying. You may even get to teach the
class a thing or two if you have particular
knowledge on a subject -- it is a very inclusive
environment.
You'll have a challenging but
very rewarding quarter with Dr. Clarke as your
professor.
